Alfalfa Sprouts Recalled by FDA Following a Salmonella Outbreak

Alfalfa Sprouts Have Been Recalled Because of Salmonella

Pat Anthony
A recent FDA recall of Tiny Green Organic Farms Alfalfa Sprouts due to a salmonella outbreak should put everyone on alert. The sprouts were recalled because of a recent outbreak of salmonella that may be linked to the sprouts.

According to the press release listing information that the FDA recalled the alfalfa sprouts, these sprouts originated in Urbana, Illinois. The company, Tiny Greens Organic Farms, is cooperating with the recall of their Alfalfa Sprouts and Spicy Sprouts products.

Recent recalls have prompted some consumers to sprout their own seeds and grow some vegetables in home gardens.

The recalled sprouts are in 4 ounce and 5 pound packages and could be in restaurants, farmers markets, grocery stores and private homes. No other sprouts are involved in this recall at this time.

Salmonella infections can be deadly for anyone with an impaired immune system, the very young and the elderly. Symptoms of salmonella poisoning can include vomiting, diarrhea and/or a fever within 72 hours of eating a contaminated food. Although many will easily recover from such an infection, anyone suspecting such symptoms are related to eating the alfalfa sprouts that was recalled should seek medical help.

The original press release about the contaminated Tiny Green Organic Farm Alfalfa products may be viewed on the FDA website. More information about salmonella poisoning is available on the Centers for Disease Control website.

Consumers are asked to return any of the recalled alfalfa sprouts to the place of purchase for a refund. Those wanting to dispose of the sprouts in the trash are asked to wrap any packages securely to so that animals will not be able to eat the sprouts.
