Algebra 2: The Basics

Introduction

In this first part of this Algebra 2 guide we will go over some basic terms of algebra that you should already be familiar with from algebra one. If you do no recognize most, if not all of these terms, than probably should review you algebra one before starting with algebra two.

Basic Algebra Terms

Please memorize each of the mathematical terms found below.

Variable - Something that contains a numerical value. Variables are normally common letters such as x.

Constant - A constant is simply a static number that cannot be changed.

Monomial - A mathematical expression with that contains just one term. Examples of monomials are simply, 8, x, and 2x2.

Binomial - Another mathematical expression, like the monomial, but with two terms. Examples of binomials are, 7x + 7, x - 1, and x4- 3x.

Trinomial - A mathematical expression containing three terms. An example of a trinomial is, 9x4 + 2x3 - 111.

Polynomial - A mathematical expression with many terms. A couples examples of a polynomial would be, 5x2 - 4x - 3, and x(x - 2) + 2x.

Linear - A linear equation is one in which the largest power given is always one.

Quadratic - A quadratic equation is where the largest power for a variable is the numeric two.

Coefficient - The coefficient of a variable is its factor or multiplier. In the term 5x2 is 5 because it is the multiplier of the variable x.

To Simplify - When you simplify a algebraic equation you are find a given variables value by using a specific mathematical formula.

Conclusion

Once you have memorized and thoroughly understand the algebraic terms listed above you are ready to continue to next part of this guide. Just make sure to understand and implant these concepts in your mind before continuing.
