Alice in Chains Original Bassist, Mike Starr Found Dead in Salt Lake City, Utah

Mike Starr was found dead on Tuesday, March 8, in Salt Lake City. He was the former bassist for Alice in Chains. He was 44-years-old. CNN reports that his cause of death is not known at present time.

Mike Starr previously appeared on season 3 of Celebrity Rehab.

His former band mates released a statement reading: "Jerry and Sean are mourning the loss of their friend and ask that the media respect their privacy - and the privacy of Mike's family - during this difficult time. Their thoughts & prayers are with Mike's family."

Dr. Drew Pinsky, host of Celebrity Rehab released a Twitter message that read: "Devastating to hear of Mike Starr succumbing to his illness. So very sad. Our prayers are with his family."

In 2002, the original lead singer of Alice in Chains' died of a drug overdose.

Mike Starr was born Michael Christopher Starr on April 4, 1966. He was a part of the original line up for Alice in Chains and remained as the bassist from 1987 until 1993.

His studio albums with Alice in Chains included two 1990 album releases: We Die Young and Facelift; and two 1992 releases: Sap and Dirt.

In 2009 he was documented for his treatment for heroin addiction at the Pasadena Recovery Center. After, he went to sober living facilities and was again documented in Sober House, a spin off of Celebrity Rehab.

Other famous recovering addicts who appeared alongside him included Mackenzie Phillips and Tom Sizemore. Starr's appearance on the documentary marked six months and sevens days of sobriety.

It was March 8, 2011 when he was arrested and charged for felony possession for possessing Oxymorphone and Alprazolam. He was booked in Salt Lake City, Utah where he was also found dead. No further details have been given at present time.

    Hi Renee, I am so saddened behind Mike's death. I feel like there were many of us rooting for him to get better, But I really think after his Layne overdosed he was never the same person. I really liked Mike because I felt that he was genuine. I grew up listening to Alice in Chains, and his death should prove the dark side of drugs(including prescription drugs). How many more people will have to die before they understand that drugs are no joke, and that these addictions are real and devestating to the abuser and those around him/her. My condolences go out to his friends and family. Great Article by the way
