Alice Movie Review

"Neco z Alenky", also known as "Alice", stars Kristyna Kohoutoua and is directed by Jan Svankmajer, who also wrote the screenplay. It's based on the novel written by Lewis Carroll titled "Alice in Wonderland".

"Alice" starts off with a young girl who warps her way into a bizarre world. The twist here is that she doesn't arrive in this world by falling down a rabbit hole, but by crawling into a drawer of a dresser. In this bewildered world, she comes across a strange line of characters that include the white rabbit and the caterpillar shown in the most simple, but unique, style.

Don't expose this to kids. The opening narration states that It's a film for children. This is far from true. It's clearly an adult picture. A creepy, if not frightening, fantasy told through the eyes of Jan Svankmajer. a man who obviously has a dark half. This is a twisted version of the beloved novel "Alice In Wonderland". A slow but engaging film that's full of ideas that keep getting wilder as the film proceeds. The stop-motion animation is remarkable for the time it was made. Don't expect much dialog here, for there is hardly any at all. As for the acting, not much was needed for the role of Alice. She just had to be adorable and Kristyna Kohoutoua manages to do just that.

I found myself patiently waiting to see if the next scene would be stranger than the last. Some of the scenes are a little bit too weird and play out too long. This doesn't effect the entirety of the movie. This film is so over the top, it put me in a state of awe. A dark film with eye-widening events that take place one after the other. It isn't hilarious, but somewhat humorous in a very dim and gloomy way. This is an impressively enticing film that's both memorable and imaginative in indescribable ways.

A haunting experience that takes you by surprise with every door that is opened, every key that is found, and every piece of mushroom that is eaten. "Alice" can be very unnerving, yet fascinating, at times. Other times, the film is just plain original. Either way, it's worth a look. This is a true spellbinder, recreating the frightening imagination of a child named Alice and possibly the worst acid trip of recent memory. 4/5 stars
