Alice in Wonderland Halloween Costume Guide

Liz Copeland
In the most well-known version of the Alice in Wonderland Halloween costume, most of us have a good idea what the costume will look like. Alice in Wonderland is a great Halloween costume idea. It is both classic and easy to do in the traditional sense, or to give your own personal sense of style.

The classic Alice in Wonderland Halloween costume consists of several parts. Those parts are:

Blue knee-length dress in little girl styling with puff sleeves

White, ruffled full apron called a pinafore

White, knee-length socks

Black mary jane style shoes

Black hairband with a bow for the top of the head

Optional accessories to complete the outfit:

Blonde, shoulder length wig (longer is fine. Try to find one with some curls)

The dress and pinafore for the Alice in Wonderland Halloween costume are often sold together. Sometimes they're even sewn together. This deluxe costume is closest to the color of blue most people associate with Alice in Wonderland (thanks to Walt Disney). It also comes with a black hair bow. On this particular website you can also separately purchase the socks, shoes, wig, and other accessories you might be interested in.

If you're a seamstress, you can also make the dress. McCall's pattern M4948 (available here) is for girls and misses (adult) patterns. The bonus to sewing your own is that you can choose your own fabrics and embellish in your own way, making the costume unique.

You can order your stockings for your Alice in Wonderland costume through the site I linked above right here*http://www.halloweencostumes.com/a-white-knee-high-stockings.html. You can also use white tights if you have them on hand or you're concerned that you might be too cold.

For shoes for your Alice in Wonderland Halloween costume, you have a couple of options. Most costumes show the woman wearing patent leather mary jane platform shoes like these. I have some, and they're surprisingly comfortable and easy to walk in in spite of how they look. However, there are oher options. Block heeled patent leather mary janes are available here. There are also some patent leather mary janes with thinner heels on the site. It is difficult to find low heeled black patent leather mary janes for women.

You have several options for the Alice in Wonderland wig as well. You could go with the Alice wig, located here if you wanted to buy your supplies in the same place. You could also go with a wig like this one or some of the other blonde wigs they have on that site.

The black ribbon hairband you could make yourself with a length of black satin ribbon. You could also cover a a hair band with black satin and put a black bow at the center top or even off-center.

Many parts of the Alice in Wonderland Halloween costume are customizable, especially the accessories.

Hey Liz! Great article, with some valuable advice. I checked out some of the links that you featured, and thought the items looked excellent. I don't know how to sew myself, but I'm putting together a Mad Hatter costume from thrift-store items. Happy Halloween!
