Alice in Wonderland Inspired Makeup Looks

The Women of Wonderland

Alexis Valentine
O.P.I has recently come out with a new line of nail lacquer in anticipation of the new Johnny Depp flick that's set to hit theaters this summer. I'm talking about Alice in Wonderland, of course. So far there's only four colors in the line, two shades of red and two intensely glittered colors in blue and purple. Rumor has it that they'll be more colors to come. After having seen the colors and display on the Trade Secret website I was inspired, so I put together three Alice in Wonderland makeup looks that can be worn any day of the week, inspired by the White Queen, the Red Queen and of course, Alice herself.

The White Queen

I'm basing this White Queen's look on the Anne Hathaway version. Start off with a clean canvas and do your usual prep work of moisturizer, concealer, powder and primer. The focus on this look are mainly the lips since the overall look is very simple. If you don't want to go for the pale look, try sweeping a matte pink hued blush around the temples and cheek bones. Just lightly though, enough to add a tiny hint of color.

For the eyes use a matte white or cream colored eye shadow all over the lids. Then add a medium pink shadow to the middle of your lids, followed by a violet color on the outer one-fourth of your eyes, and blend in avoiding the middle as much as possible. Now get out a white shimmery shadow and apply that to the inner one-fourth of the eyelids and around the tear duct. Use that same shade to highlight your brow bone. The last step is to use a flat eyeliner brush to apply the violet eye shadow on your bottom lash line three-fourths of the way from the outside moving in, and gently smudge it a little to soften the line. Use the shimmery white shadow alone the inner one-fourth bottom lash line. Finish this look off with strong eyebrows, black liquid eyeliner on top, a coat or two of mascara just to the top lashes, and white or silver eyeliner on the water line.

All that's left to this look are the lips, and the lips are the key focus here since the rest of the face is pretty muted. Go with a dark red color, a good example is NYX's 'Black Cherry' lipstick. The color might come off really strong depending on how pale your skin is, so use a lip gloss of similar color to dial it down a notch. I'd also recommend polishing this look off with a dark red nail polish, or a French manicure.

The Red Queen

This Red Queen look is also based off of the upcoming Alice in Wonderland version. We're going for every day wearable, not costume so don't expect anything as crazy as what Helena Bonham Carter had going on. Once again, start off with a clean canvas. Since the eyes are the focus here I'd suggest skipping the blush and going light on the lips. When using bright colors it's important to tread carefully, because it's a fine line between looking vampy and looking like a clown.

Start off by applying a white or pearl base cream shadow, then pat down a powder blue shadow to the middle of the lids and out. Next add a shimmer pastel blue to the outer corners and blend in towards the middle. Apply a matte white shadow to the inner one-fourth corner and around the tear duct. Use that same color on the brow bones. Go back and clean out any fall outs around the eyes, and use a flat eyeliner brush to apply the shimmer pastel blue all along the bottom lash line, then smudge it slightly to soften the lines. Now apply liquid eyeliner on top, and use a black eyeliner pencil for the water line. Apply a few coats of mascara and false lashes for even more dramatic eyes. Rounding off this look use a purplish red lip gloss. Something that isn't too bold or bright so that it doesn't compete with the eyes. I'd recommend cherry red or black for the nails.

Alice

This Alice look is based on the original and not the 2010 movie version. I borrowed this look from "ahanhbarbie34" on Youtube because I thought her rendition of Alice was the most realistic and wearable. It's also very simple. As always, start off with a clean canvas. We're going to start out with blush first since we're going to go heavier with it. Use your favorite pink blush all along your cheek bones and the apples of your cheeks. You want to really make the apples pink but make sure to blend it out so that it doesn't look splotchy. For the eyes you'll be starting out with a pearly white shadow that will go all over the lid, then add a copper brown color to the crease and outer corners of the eyes, and blend. Go back and touch up the middle of the lid with shimmery white shadow, then use that same shadow to highlight the brow bone, bridge of your nose and cheek bones. Next, apply your black liquid eyeliner to the top lash line, and use a flat liner brush to apply a bright purple shadow along the outer half of your lower lids. Apply white eyeliner to your water line and inner corners. Now apply your mascara and false lashes. Applying a half lash to your bottom lash line will give your eyes a more doll-like look.

For your lips use a matte rose colored lipstick followed by a lip gloss of similar shade. Go light on the gloss though, just dab a little on the center and work it out. For your nails I'd recommend going with a nude mauve or a blue shade to represent Alice's dress.

Although these three looks are geared more towards light skin tones, this will work for any complexion if you know how to adjust the coloring to suit you. Which ever look you go with have fun with it, and remember that the best accessory to any look is confidence. For pictures and sample outfit ideas check out, "Alice in Wonderland for practical use."
