Alicia Silverstone Not the First Celebrity to Name Her Baby After an Animal (or a Bear for that Matter)
Alicia Silverstone is now the proud mother of a baby boy named Bear Blu Jarecki! The bundle of joy (whose daddy is rocker Christopher Jarecki) was born on Cinco de Mayo, so he'll really get to celebrate on his birthday in the future. However, his parents might not want to celebrate their unique baby name choice just yet -- their son isn't the first celebrity baby with the name "Bear."
Just last August celebrity chef Jamie Oliver also opted for an alliterative name, dubbing his son Buddy Bear (which sound more like the name of baby's toy than a baby name).
And Red Hot Chili Pepper rocker Anthony Kiedis also decided to use the ferocious critter for his son's middle name, going with Everly Bear when he was born in October 2007 (the name is a combination of the band the Everly Brothers and the animal).
So why all the love for the name Bear? Maybe celebrities simply like the sound of the name of hardcore adventurer Bear Grylls, who also isn't a stranger to weird baby names -- he named his son Huckleberry Edward Jocelyne Grylls (so he gets a bad-ass animal name while his son gets named after a fruit? Then again, if he was going a different direction, Huckleberry Hound and Huckleberry Finn could both be pretty crafty when situations called for it). Grylls also has another son named after a fictional dog character -- Marmaduke.
But bears aren't the only animals that celebrities are naming their babies after. Perhaps stars have been inspired by other celebrities with animal names, like John Cougar Mellencamp, Tiger Woods, and Wolf Blitzer (which are both admittedly pretty awesome names), because quite a few have chosen animalistic names for their kids. Here's a look at a few:
Sparrow James Midnight Madden '" The son of Nicole Richie and Joel Madden was named after a tiny songbird (somehow Sparrow sounds like more of a girl's name).
Lark Song Previn '" Sadly, the adopted Vietnamese daughter of Mia Farrow and Andre Previn died on Christmas day in 2007.
Birdie '" Actress Busy Philipps also went for a chirpy, cheerful name.
Heavenly Hiraani Tiger Lily '" Okay, so the daughter of Paula Yates and INXS singer Michael Hutchence was actually named after the flower, but she's got "Tiger" mixed in all that craziness. Bob Geldof gained custody of the child after her parents died.
Rufus Tiger '" The son of Queen musician Roger Taylor also has the big cat in his name.
Puma - Erykah Badu and rapper Tracy "The D.O.C" Curry opted for a different big cat name for their daughter.
Nakoa-Wolf Manakauapo Namakaeha Momoa '" In 2009, Lisa Bonet and Jason Momoa made "Wolf" the most normal-sounding part of their son's name.
So while not all animal names are created equal, at least it's nice for celebrities like Alicia Silverstone to show their love for our fellow creatures by naming babies after them.
