Alive, but Not Really Living

A Poem

Etienne J. Sarfelli
My eyes are duller than they used to be

There are streaks of gray in my hair

I look in the mirror

and my skin doesn't seem as resilient as it used to

But another day passes

And I'm still here

Going through the motions

Of eating and breathing and sleeping

And working, working, and working some more

Laughing at things that are funny enough

Just to say that I feel something deep inside of me

Still seeking something I cannot find

Or even define

But something to create a bit of joy

Knowing that time is passing right before my eyes

And I cannot slow it down

Hoping there's more to it than this

Something... anything

Finally understanding that I am alive

But not really living.
