One of the most enjoyable and worthwhile volunteer experiences that I've ever been involved with was when my friends and I volunteered for the Alive Rescue organization. Alive Rescue, at 1937 North Winchester Avenue in Chicago's Bucktown neighborhood, rescues homeless dogs and cats, and places them for adoption.

When I first heard about the volunteer opportunities that were available, I knew I wanted to help. Helping the other volunteers with event planning and fundraising was so much fun, because we got to get to know some of the local merchants, who always were so generous when it came to donating items for event auctions, and helping at the events. Other volunteer opportunities that I was also interested in were being on the Green/Eco Experts committee, and the Transport committee, where volunteers help transport the animals to various locations, including their foster homes and the vet.

We even got a group of people together to distribute flyers, not only in the Bucktown neighborhood, but all around the Chicago and suburban areas, for one of the events, the Pet Fest. The Grrrrrls Night Out at Flirty Girl Fitness was so much fun, and everyone worked together to make sure the event went on without a hitch. The Shelter Shiver was also tons of fun, and two of my co-workers, who lived 20 miles away, joined us there.
