All About the Auburn 49er Fire in Northern California

The Auburn Fire is Also Known as the 49er Fire

The 49er Fire in Auburn, California, in the Sierra Foothills of Northern California has already destroyed hundreds of acres and forced the evacuation of many people. It is currently about 50 percent contained.

If you have ever traveled east from Sacramento along the I-80 freeway toward Reno, you know that the land and towns around the freeway in this area are very dry. This makes it an environment for dangerous fires.

Recently a fire named the 49er Fire or the Auburn Fire has broken out near Auburn, California. The fire is expected to be fully contained by Tuesday night and hopefully extinguished later this week.

According to the Auburn Journal, the fire started in the afternoon on Sunday, August 30. The cause is not yet known. At least 30 homes have been burned to the ground.

Animals Injured

A number of animals have been injured or killed by the 49er fire in Auburn. News 10 has reported that the Placer County Animal Shelter took in many dogs and cats that had suffered burns to their paws from the fire or from hiding in dangerous areas to escape the fire.

Where is Auburn?

The city of Auburn, Calif., is located in Northern California along Interstate 80. Auburn is located approximately 30 miles northeast of Sacramento and 100 miles southwest of Reno, Nevada. Auburn is a city within Placer County.

Auburn is associated with the Gold Rush of 1849 because many miners set up camp in the area when the Gold Rush became such a huge event from 1849 until the early 1850s. According the Wikipedia, Auburn was originally named Auburn Ravine when it was settled in 1848.
