All About Being a Webmaster

Shante Renee
Have you ever stopped to think who is responsible for your favorite Web site that you visit on a daily basis? For example, everyone knows Tom! He's what you would call a Webmaster. He developed www.myspace.com, which currently is a phenomenon with teenagers all over the world. Every time you log on to MySpace.com, do you know that Tom is the one who made it possible for you to have communication with your friends and family?

So exactly, what does a webmaster do? Webmasters help create and develop stunning websites, often for large corporations, government agencies, or other institutions. They are in charge of telling the computer what to yield by writing a code. Also, they are responsible for the glorious graphics, menus, links, and text that you see on a website. I aspire to be a web designer, and work with top companies to develop state-of-the art full themed websites, for surfers (like you)to enjoy.

Becoming a webmaster isn't for everyone. You have to be creative, responsible, and be able to adapt. In order for a Web page to be developed to its fullest potential and attract attention, good writing skills and creativity is a must. Also, a webmaster has to be responsible for marketing and managing a website. Adapting means that, as a webmaster, you have to be willing to compromise on short notice; as well as be flexible with your hours to benefit your client. With all these skills, qualities, and characteristics, anyone who applies themselves can be a wonderful webmaster.

To begin with, creativity isn't something that you can 'get'. As a webmaster, you have to just have creativity, and enjoy designing, developing, and creating everything from graphics to color schemes and 'styles' for a website. If you are not very creative, you can choose to work with a team of webmasters, for a company. Everyone could work together to complete a website, instead of individual work. If you prefer to work alone, but lack creativity, you could also meet up with a graphic designer, who specializes in developing the appearance of a website.

Secondly, a lot of responsibility comes with being a webmaster. You have to be able manage very stressful situations. For example, if your client demands that you rebuild an entire website and its layout, you must either negotiate or comply. Also, if you were on a deadline, you may have to cram in last minute details, to satisfy your client(s). Being able to manage stress, respond quickly, and communicate well with people is all apart of being responsible.

Last but not least, being flexible is key to any webmaster's success. Unless you own your own business, you may have to conform to your boss's decisions. Being able to bend over backwards to satisfy a client could mean the difference between your next customer referral, raise, or promotion. If you give attitude, it is likely that your efforts will be met with irritated, annoyed clients, who will give a bad testimony of your services. This all goes back the famous saying: treat others how you want to be treated.

In conclusion, there are a lot important qualities, characteristics, and skills that are both needed and required if you plan on becoming a webmaster. If you can learn how to further develop your creativity, handle responsibility, and learn to adapt to all types of nerve-racking situations, then you can become a well-rounded webmaster that any client will be lucky to have!
