Religion has played a major role in shaping the future of many nations. Many wars have been fought with an intention to spread a particular religion.
But Buddhism has become popular without fighting any war. It is said Buddhism is one of the most popular religion which has centuries of history and millions of followers in the entire world. In terms of popularity and following, Buddhism even overtakes Christianity, which also has its followers throughout the world.
When did Buddhism originate?
Some believe that Buddhism was born with the birth of Buddha in 556 BC. The other school believes when Siddhartha attained enlightenment then Buddha was born and then Buddhism also took its birth. That was in the year 531 BC. Irrespective of when Buddhism was born, it is one of the oldest religions in the world. Similar to the spiritual leaders in other religions, even Buddha is said to have communicated with God.
How to become a Buddhist?
Any one can become a Buddhist just by declaring that he is a Buddhist. Normally, people are introduced to Buddhism by friends or relatives. Before embracing a new religion one should know the teachings of the new religion, its philosophies and many other things related to that religion. This is because the new religion is totally a different school of thought compared to his original religion. Unless he understands the new religion, he/she becomes only a shadow of the religion. Many books and web sites are available to have knowledge of the religion of his choice.
There are many local Buddhist temples which impart knowledge of Buddhism. So, before one decides to embrace the religion, one should go through the literature and have discussion with the religious leaders and then he should decide whether or not to join the particular religion.
Concepts of Buddhism:
Buddha advocated non violence and detachment from worldly life and from physical goods because, Buddha says that in this world everything is temporary. The downfall of human beings begins with attachment to worldly life. Many calls Buddhism as a pacifist. It aims to attain Nirvana or complete enlightenment.
Why meditation so important in Buddhism?
Siddhartha, carefully analyzed and found that the world is just temporary, he got enlightenment and became Buddha. For this analysis he followed the path of Meditation. Meditation is the corner stone on which Buddhism is built. There are many sects with varying paths but they all follow the principle of Meditation to find out the cure for the ills of the Society.
