All My Children Guest Stars: Carol Burnett, Sarah Michelle Gellar, and John O'Hurley

As All My Children drew to a close on ABC, several stars signed on to make guest appearances. Although most were former cast members reprising the roles they had vacated, there were three notable exceptions. One former guest star was reprising her role, one former cast member was back as a different character, and one star debuted as a new character.

Carol Burnett
A longtime fan of All My Children, Carol Burnett reprised her role as Verla Grubbs, Opal's (Jill Larson) rival for Sam Brady (Jason Kincaid). Erica (Susan Lucci) was the first to have any contact with her; they met at the airport when Verla hit town and Erica was on her way to Los Angeles. Verla recognized Erica but had no idea she was Opal's best friend. When Erica make it clear that her loyalty was to Opal, Verla suddenly wanted nothing to do with her. She later turned up at Sam's class reunion but left in a dramatic fashion when he rebuffed her advances.

Sarah Michelle Gellar
Although she vacated the role of Kendall Hart in 1995, Sarah Michelle Gellar wanted to return before the end of the series. Her guest appearance on September 21 paid tribute to her past roles as both Kendall Hart and Buffy Summers, the world's most famous vampire slayer. Gellar returned as a woman who believed she had been to Pine Valley before, and she was adamant that Erica Kane was her mother. That's not all, though; she was seeing vampires everywhere!

John O'Hurley
In his first and only role on All My Children, John O'Hurley guest-starred as Kit Sterling, an Oscar-winning movie producer. Kit approached Erica at a bookstore in L.A., saying that he had already read her book and wanted to make it into a movie. He took her to the Hollywood Walk of Fame, promising that she would have her own star there someday; a close-up showed that they were standing at Susan Lucci's star. Erica eventually agreed to work with the movie mogul. This decision was a huge step in fulfilling a lifelong dream, but it cost her relationship with Jackson (Walt Willey). This character was in several episodes before the show ended its broadcast run on September 23.

Sarah Michelle Gellar sure has done well for herself since leaving the show.
