My first black dress which I have had for maybe five years has a low cut neck line otherwise it is very simple. I use my shoes and matching jewelry to spice this dress up. I then use a hairpiece of the same color. If it is an evening event I wear silver or gold shoes and dramatic earrings of a matching color, this makes the look very striking, then to tone it down a little I use a simple necklace of the same color which will go well since the dress is just simply black. I continue to accessorize it with a form of glittery make up either in the eye shadow or lipstick not both.
With this same dress I am able to attend day functions as well. All I do different is use white patent leather shoes preferably a slip on in the summer months. I then incorporate a white patent leather belt or a simple white sash around the waist. I continue to decorate the outfit with matching white hoop earrings and a white necklace. I use a clutch handbag either in white or black. I tend not to walk around much with a bag I only use it to put my essentials in it.
My second simple plain black dress has ruffles all the way down to about knee length and it is high by the neckline and low cut on the back. I keep this one simpler since the dress itself does wonders so I really do not have to add more other than change a particular hair clip. I like to wear black patent leather shoes with this and avoid too much jewelry. I will usually clip my hair up and add simple gold or diamond stud earrings. And that is all that I need to keep an elegant look going.
And my last dress I have had for about fifteen years. It is a square top dress with spaghetti straps and it looks great with a jacket of any color. I have worn a low V cut sweater with this to make it a look that will work great in an office setting as if taking the place of a skirt. I have a shiny silver glittery silk blouse with buttons and have worn this over the dress as well. It will give it an amazing touch. This dress can be accessorized with high black boots and with a sweater in the winter and in the summer it can simply be worn plain without much for a nice warm day to be out. In the evening it can become a glamour dress with adding appropriate colorful jewelry.
I find that all simple black dresses can be dressed up or down with matching the right shoes. Your feet will definitely say a lot. Jazzy bright sparkles in the evening and toned down smooth colors in the day. A high heel in the evening and a low heel during the day is all that is needed to change the mood of any simple black dress.
Now go to your closet and look at all that can be used to incorporate with your simple black dress. Have fun!

I'm like you. Seventy-five percent of my wardrobe is black. I like accessorizing basic black with interesting accessories. Loved the article. :-)
Life doesn't have to be complicated - and if it starts to become that way, we need to remember the basics. The "little" black dress is basic - and you have three of them! Bravo! Most women 'look' good in black - from casual/sexy to professional/business and every mood/event in between. Informative, useful write, Mags... Take care, Michael
My wife is the same way!lol
i love my black dress, but I'd better not gain any weight...LOL....terrific idea for an article
Excellent....I stand, we all stand! This was wonderful for the season and style this year. I went shopping today and black and white is in, but I never would have thought to incorporate it the way that you did. Great creativity you have in that head of yours. I might actually have to pull out the black dress now! Thank you
Gotta love the black dress, I know I have mine, and my all purpose black dress suit. Excelllent advice.
I also came back because I really like this article :)
I had to come back and say that if you have the right black dress one of the best things you can do with it is to get admiring glances :)
You can't really go wrong with a little black dress. I love black too, but I do try to wear other colours that also complement my olive complexion.
