History
The dog has figured in history predominantly. The faculties of the dog have made him an adorable pet of man - good sight, hearing, sense of smell. All these faculties are weak for the human race.
Primitive man captured dogs for rearing and gave them shelter and protection. After man changed his hunting mode into a more settled lifestyle, dogs were required for diverse purposes. One such was to guard his herds. This was the beginning of pastoral shepherd dog. Sheepdogs became very popular throughout Europe. The sheepdogs varied in size, coat and color. The climate dictated the nature of the coats. Those in very cold climates had thick coats, whereas those in warmer areas had shorter coats. Powerful dogs were required in areas with more predators.
With industrialization the need for dogs differed. The first breed of German shepherd was found in 1891 in Germany by Capt. Max von Stepahnitz. He discovered the first of the breed in a dog show in Germany. The progeny of the Dog named Hector Linksrhein was the father of this breed. With the course of time inbreeding happened and the breed which we see now as German shepherd had developed.
The onset of war changed the functionality of the dog. A mere guard of the sheep of Germany, it was later used as rescue dog, messenger and personal guard dog in World War I. There are many stories of its intelligence, steadfastness and bravery which stood the test of time. Many servicemen acquired these dogs and took them to their homes.
The English Kennel Club recognized the dog as a separate breed in 1919. The name of the dog has changed many times. The final German Shepherd was fully recognized in 1977.
