All About Haunted Museums in Ohio

Jennifer Eblin
Ohio has enough haunted museums and museums with a ghost story attached that it could almost fill up an entire book. These museums range from the smaller places where a president was born or lived to a huge art museum that thousands of people visit every day. Just take a look at a few of these stories.

The Cincinnati area has more haunted places than almost any other city and a few of those haunted spots are museums like the Cincinnati Museum of Art. Late at night security guards working in the area have seen some strange things including a large black shadow figure. Reports claim the figure was at least seven foot tall, but always disappears quickly.

The Cincinnati Museum Center is also haunted. A guard by the name of Shirley was trying to catch thieves who were making off with stolen computers. One night she was shot in the museum and though her body was moved by the killers, she returned to her former workplace. Shirley is believed to still walk the building and is responsible for keeping the doors locked up tight. There are also stories of a ghostly pilot spotted in an old airplane from World War II.

The haunted Taft Museum is also in Cincinnati. According to legend the ghost that resides here likes to play with one room in particular. Staff will arrive in the morning to find that the door is locked and a chair shoved under the door from the inside, though no one is there.

You also have the Wood County Historical Museum in Bowling Green. Once upon a time the building was used as a nursing home and a hospital. Legend claims that the mentally insane were kept locked in a shed on the property. Now people claim to hear people moaning or crying in the shed and seeing the door lock move on its own.

Columbus has the haunted Air and Space Museum. The building itself isn't haunted, but the objects inside the building are. The museum is home to a number of old planes used in combat and people have claimed to see people inside the planes. There are also stories of security guards seeing ghosts wandering around the museum late at night.

Dayton's Patterson Homestead Historic Museum is haunted by the Patterson family who once lived there. There are stories of cold spots, things moving on their own and rocking chairs that move as if someone's sitting there. In addition people on staff sometimes smell food cooking in the kitchen. Dayton also has a haunted air force museum where people see the ghosts of former pilots still sitting in their planes.

In Gallipolis you can visit the Our House Museum, which was once used as a tavern and inn. Guests and visitors have spotted shadowy figures and heard people walking and talking in the hallways when no one was there.

The Harding Home in Marion is where President Warren G. Harding once resided and he apparently still comes home every year on the anniversary of his death. Staff claim that a clock on his desk will stop every year at the time of his death and that a model ship moves.

The Thomas Edison Birthplace Museum in Milan is haunted, though not by Edison himself. Stories claim that strange figures have been spotted in the building, usually by children. There are also footsteps reported in otherwise empty hallways and music that seems to come from nowhere.

At the New Union Center for the Arts in Oberlin, there are several ghosts. People claim to see a ghost appear and disappear and see things move on their own. In addition there are stories of voices and footsteps heard when no one is there.

Last on the list is the haunted Zoar Historical Village in Zoar, Ohio. Supposedly the area once had a nursing home and those who lived there suffered physical and mental abuse. Visitors report seeing people disappear in the blink of an eye and hearing odd things.

Maybe some people just aren't ready to leave this world behind when they die...
