Acne comes in many forms. It can show as pimples, whiteheads, blackheads, pustules or cysts. Acne does not only show up in the facial area, but can also be seen on the chest and back.
Unfortunately, the exact cause of acne is not yet known even by physicians. But one of the factors they are considering is the increase in the male sex hormones called androgen during puberty. This hormone stimulates the oil glands to produce more sebum (oil).
Our skin is made up of pores. For some reason, some pores get clogged or closed. The oil that is being produced by the glands is secreted through these pores. When the oil is not able to get through the skin because of clogged pores, it builds up underneath the skin and bacteria start to feast on it. This causes inflammation on the surrounding tissue.
There are many beliefs that acne is caused by certain foods like chocolates, pizza, and other greasy food. This is only a myth and foods show no relation in making the acne worse. Dirt, while really unhealthy, does not also cause acne. It is but natural that some are oilier than others. Another myth that others say about acne is that it is also caused by stress. There is no scientific evidence to prove that allegation. Although some people who have acne become emotionally upset which make them prick on their zits. This would definitely cause acne to get worse.
The best way to treat acne is to see a dermatologist Dermatologists are experts on any skin problems and they definitely know what to do with an acne breakout. They can prescribe medicines to treat it and some topical soap or cream to apply on affected areas.
For mild acne, doctors may prescribe the use of topical medicines such as sulfur soap, salicylic acid and benzoyl peroxide. For moderate to severe cases, topical antibiotics and retinoids (vitamin A derivatives) may be prescribed. Oral antibiotics commonly prescribed are tetracycline, minocycline, and doxycycline. Oral and topical medicines may be combined as advised by the doctor.
For severe cystic acne or those with really deep pimples that are hard to treat, an oral drug called isotretinoin is prescribed which helps prevent scar formation. There are also some birth control pills that can help clear up the skin with acne. These pills work for acne caused by hormones in women.
Other than these prescriptions, personal caring for the skin is also important for those with acne. They should clean their face gently with a mild cleanser twice daily (morning and evening). After exercising, face should also be washed to remove excess oil. Also, avoid touching the pimples and other affected areas as this may just worsen the inflammation. Do not prick or squeeze the blemishes.
Acne can definitely be treated so there is no reason to feel bad at all. Almost everybody get to have acne anyway. We just have different skin types which makes the intensity of acne buildup different from each other. But then again, there are a lot of good dermatologists out there who can help solve this problem. It will only be a matter of a few weeks before a more beautiful and fresher face and skin be realized.
