Now, we need to learn a bit of Spanish for survival. Here are the basic 9:
Número 1:
Hola - Oh-La - Hello
Used through all the Spanish Speaking World for Hello. A great word and there is no doubt that wherever you go you will hear it. This greeting can be used in nearly every situation - formal or informal.
Número 2:
¿Habla Usted Inglés? - Ahbah Ou-stead Ing-gless? - Do you speak English?
This is great. It is the simple way to make life easy. See if they speak your language. The truth is if they do speak, they will. However, depending on where you go and the education level, it could be quite hard to find someone who speaks English. Not to mention that sometimes if they speak a little they won't tell you because you will see them as a native speaker and they can't keep up with you speed. Or, they will tell you they speak English and they really understand nothing so all you get is a friendly "yes" even when it doesn't fit.
Número 3:
Hablo un poco español - Ahblow un Poo-coo Es-panyol - I Speak a Little Spanish.
Once you say Hola people will think you speak. This is exactly what you need to say, WOAH!!! - I just speak a little bit of Spanish.
Número 4:
¿Cómo se dice...? - Co-Mo Say Dee-Say... - How do you say...?
This all-purpose phrase is used to find out how to say any word. You just say this phrase and then point to an object, or you can say an English word. It's an easy way to increase some basic vocabulary.
Númbero 5:
¿Dónde está el baño? - Don-day es-tah-el- ban-yo - Where is the Bathroom?
Everyone who travels needs to know this phrase. It is for sure must in those ever-so-desperate moments of life.
Número 6:
Muchas Gracias - Moo-chass-grass-ee-us - Thanks a lot!
These are a couple of the most useful words you could ever learn. They show you are appreciative, even if you didn't understand anything the person you are talking to has said.
Número 7:
Estoy Perdido (a) - Es-toy Pear-Dee-Dough - I'm Lost!
That's right. You never know when you will need to say, I'm lost. Maybe your venturing around town to see where you can or cannot go.
Número 8:
¿Cuánto Cuesta Esta? - Cuan-toe-Cues-tah-S-tah- How much is this?
This is what you really need to know whenever you have that urge to shop until you drop.
Número 9:
¿Me puede ayudar? - May Puedass ah-you-darr - Can you help me?
You never know when you may need some help
