All Natural and Environmentally Friendly Cat Litter Alternatives

Gwendolyn Taylor
Are you a proud cat owner, but fed up with the odors and hassle of most household name cat litters out there? Looking for a cat litter that is more effective and is safe for you, your cat, and the environment? Below are some ideas to get you pointed in the right direction.

Plant-Derived Cat Litter

Corn has been the latest rage in the all natural cat litter trends. Take the brand "World's Best Cat Litter" for example. Made from whole kernel corn, this type of cat litter is dust free, odor eliminating, and since it is super absorbent it also provides excellent clumping power. Other forms of plant derived cat litter includes wheat/peanut husks, unprocessed corn cobs, and citrus peels. All of these are organic based and are biodegradable, flushable, and safe for the environment.

Tree Sawdust Cat Litter

The most popular form of tree derived cat litter is pine pellet cat litter. Pine pellet cat litters comes from the sawdust of scrapped pine lumber. The benefits of pine pellet cat litter is that It also naturally absorbs and neutralizing ammonia, which in turn reduces odors. "Feline Pine" is one of the more popular brand names of pine pellet cat litter. Cedar sawdust natural cat litter is also another tree derived form of cat litter that ahs the same benefiting effects as pine pellet cat litter.

Recycled Paper and Newspaper-Based Cat Litter

Such cat litters are great because they are biodegradable, non-toxic, and flushable. They are also literally dust-free which is great for people with allergies. Popular brands include Purina's "Yesterday's News" paper based pellet cat litter.

Crystal Form Cat Litter

This is probably my most favorite form of environmentally friendly and natural cat litters. Crystals cat litter can be formed from either sand or silica gel (a combination of silica dioxide sand, water, and oxygen) and are shaped into crystal sphere forms. The best beneficial factor of crystal cat litter is high capability of retaining moisture. Such litter can last up to one month per litter box and per cat, and is excellent at reducing odors. It also reduces tracking and litter box mess and is flushable. I have been using this type of cat litter for quite awhile now and it has made my life easier and my cat happier. One of the more better known crystal form of cat litter brands is "FreshStep Crystals".
