All About Ponce, Puerto Rico

Puerto Rico has become a popular tourist destination. For those that don't know, Puerto Rico is a commonwealth of the United States, which means US citizens don't need a passport to get to the enchanting island. Tourism is huge in Puerto Rico. Every year numerous cruise ships dock near Old San Juan and tourists flock to the many sights to see across the island. Puerto Rico is known for its beautiful beaches and friendly residents. While San Juan is one of the favorite vacation destinations, there are several other cities in Puerto Rico that are equally interesting and deserve a special look.

One of these cities is Ponce. Ponce is the third largest city in Puerto Rico. It is a city with a rich history and definitely worth a closer look.

The city was founded in 1692 by Loiza Ponce de Leon, who happens to be the great-grandson of Juan Ponce de Leon. The city has several "nick names" including "La Perla del Sur" (Pearl of the South), "Ciudad Senorial" (Majestic City), and "La Ciudad de los Leones" (City of the Lions), referring to Ponce de Leon.

As tourism has grown in general in Puerto Rico, tourism in Ponce has increased as well. So, there are several hotels and restaurants to choose form. There are also many things to see in the city.

Starting downtown, the main square, known as Plaza de las Delicias, is a beautiful place to visit. There are several gorgeous fountains and benches that allow visitors to relax and admire the city. One of the more famous tourist spots is Parque de Bombas. You definitely can't miss it! It is a red and black old wooden fire house that is now used as a museum.

The firehouse was actually a working fire station, beginning in 1883. In 1990 it became the museum that it is today. In 1883 a fire broke out in the city of Ponce that threatened the entire area. Luckily this fire station was in use and the brave fire men working there were able to save the city. Also in Ponce, tourists can check out the Museum of Puerto Rican Music as well as the Ponce Museum of Art, both well worth the trip.

One final place to visit in Ponce, Puerto Rico is La Casa de la Masacre de Ponce. This is another museum with free admission. It is mostly dedicated to what has become known as the "Ponce Massacre". March 21, 1937 a group of Puerto Rican Nationalists gathered for a peaceful protest. It ended after 19 people were killed by the police. The museum recounts the events and has a section dedicated to Pedro Albizu Campos, the Puerto Rican Nationalist leader. This event is very important in Puerto Rican history and the museum is an excellent place to visit for any tourist or resident.

This special town is definitely worth a trip. It is a true Puerto Rican city with an interesting history. Make plans to stop by as you trek across the island. You won't be sorry!
