All is Right

Order, but Not Mine

Gordon James
The orderliness of this world,
in spite of our will
is astounding.

The Window Blinds order the shadows and the sunlight
darkerlighter, darkerlighter, darkerlighter,
no municipal ordinance as to percent of light allowed to pass.
no state agency to ascertain their effectiveness.

The African Violet still explodes from the middle of it's pot,
a green fourth of July on the window sill.
no federal directive as to holiday observance
or regulatory power regarding indoor use of incendiaries.

How is it then that
We---who shall impose our order on Creation---
can not impose it on ourselves?
the African violet, removed from natural habitat for my pleasure, now needs water.
the blinds, properly installed per my instruction, now need dusting.

"But I don't want to right now. Maybe later."

The shadows from the blinds
slide over the blossoms and fade as the clouds,
their own marching orders received and obeyed
pass o'erhead.
