All that I Want (Is All that I Need)

Lisa R. Strong
I don't want to live in a palace;
Nor ride around in a fancy car;
I don't have to have;
A front porch to sit on;
Or a closet full of clothes;
I don't need to see the ocean;
Or live in a cabin by a lake;
I don't need the latest gadgets;
Cable TV or internet service;
Cell phones or diamond rings;
A computer to write or draw with;
I have always lived a simple life;
And if I become even harder pressed;
There are things that I can sell;
And luxuries that I can do without;
I am slowly learning detachment;
Out of necessity;
I can let go, if you want me to;
Yet I still want to hold on;
The things that I need;
Are the things that I ask you for;
Lately for me;
What I want and what I need;
Have become one and the same;
All that I need;
And all that I want;
Is a decent job;
A sense of purpose;
And a steady wage;
Where I don't have to worry;
When payment comes due;
All that I want;
And all that I need;
Is a roof over my head;
Preferably, one that doesn't leak;
Food in my belly;
Clothes on my back;
Shoes on my feet;
To be able to take care of my cat;
And to have a little pocket change;
Something to put in the offering;
After years of hard labor;
To not be afraid of getting sick;
To find a light when darkness pours in;
Or someone who loves my heart;
Is this too much to ask?
Am I being selfish?
Or don't you want these things for me?
Forgive me for asking;
After all, you are God;
And you always know;
Even when I can't see it;
What is best for me;
Yet through lonely tears;
And white-knuckled anxiety;
I still have to ask;
Because it is so hard to hold unto faith;
When you can't even afford;
To buy a basket to put it in
