All About Working from Home

Laura Ward
There are pros and cons to working from home. I am a stay at home mom of two boys, but I also work from home. There are a variety of opportunities available for people that want to work from home. However, some of the opportunities that are available are not legitimate. Even if the opportunity is legitimate, your situation and the jobs needs may not be compatible. What kind of work can you do from home? There are alot of home based business opportunities available for women, such as Creative Memories, Mary Kay, Arbonne, Melaleuca, Avon and many more. Some people are computer programmers or web developers and make their living from home. Other opportunities can be medical coding and billing, medical transcription, travel agent or a daycare provider. Some people run florist shops, consignment shops and barber shops from their home. The list can continue.

No matter what type of work you do from home, you need to have an area designated for your career. You will need a safe place to keep up with tax records, financial concerns, customer relations, inventory and other business related items. When you begin thinking about working from home, decide if you will need a room devoted to your job. Sometimes, a closet or other small room works just as well as an actual office. Will you need a computer, internet access, a phone line, fax machine, filing cabinet, printer, copy machine or other type of office equipment?

Think about the environment that needs to be created in order to support your career. Is it okay to have noisy children or pets during working hours? Do you need to play soft background music or does the room need to be completely silent? Do you live in a large city where traffic noises will interfere with your job?

The pros to working from home include:

*You are your own boss. You can set your own goals and follow through with them.
*More than likely you will not have a dress code to follow.
*Most of the time, you can schedule your own hours and there is a greater amount of flexibility.
*Lowered gas bills/less mileage on car.
*Tax write offs

The cons to working from home include:

*Lack of social interaction.
*Household bills may become higher from being home during the day.
*Temptation to slack on work.
*No help from co-workers when workload is heavy.
