Many dog owners have a common problem, mess their dog shed hair in their homes. Certain breeds of dogs will shed more than others. Unfortunately, those who would like to adopt or purchase a dog may be less enthusiastic having a dog that sheds. All dogs will shed, but selecting a breed of dog that sheds minimally for new dog owners that type of breed, more likely welcomed into their home. A dog that sheds the least depends on the coat type: Single -- coated dog breeds (Terrier breeds, Schnauzers, and Poodles) shed the least amount, compared to double coat dog breeds. However, hairless dog breeds do not shed at all (About.com:Dogs - What type of dogs do not shed? -- from Krista Mifflin). Double - coated and long coated dogs leave tufts of hair found around the home or land everywhere. Also, double -- coated dogs have stiffer hairs that can be hurtful, walking across on bare feet like splinters (Dog Owner's Guide (The online magazine for all pets and show dog owners - Decisions, Decisions, Decisions! - Some consideration in choosing the right dog). Unfortunately, worse than dog shedding for some people, produces an allergic reaction or symptoms, preventing having a dog at home. Causing an allergic reaction (regardless of hairless or short dog), skin dander triggers the pathogen. Hypoallergenic dog breeds are more suitable for dog owners, less likely to trigger an allergic reaction but not 100% allergy free. Individually allergic reaction depends upon threshold, a person may experience, and the time the allergic reaction may start. Before adopting a dog, recommend spending 20 minutes confined to a small area with the dog, evaluate for any allergic reaction, instead of getting any allergies, after the dog is welcomed into a home (Wikipedia - Hypoallergenic dog breeds).

Dogs shed hair because old hairs stop growing to make room for new hair growth. A dog's hair consists of three different types of fur: The insulation is the undercoat of the dog hair, can be extremely thick depending on the breed or in colder climates, undercoat of the dog would be thicker. The topcoat are the guard hairs: Protect the underlying skin, and undercoat. Also, help the dog shed water. The sensory stimulation for a dog is the whiskers. Dogs are known to start shedding during the Spring Time, however dogs that are kept year round in doors, mostly in warm surroundings, shed year round. Also, after a dog experiences stress including undergoing surgery, illness, giving birth or lives in a strange environment (including a kennel) begin to shed. Reducing the amount of shedding by brushing the dog daily, regular bathing the dog, and if the dog has good temperament use a vacuum cleaner but avoid vacuuming the ears (prevents damaging hearing). Shaving a dog to eliminate shedding may cause health concerns: The dog would become more perceptible to sunburns, easily catch a cold in air -- conditioned homes, susceptible to insect bites getting closer to the skin, and during the summer time the absent of a dog's coat can't help the dog cool down (Tundraca's Daily Living Guide to Pets - Why Do Dogs Shed? by Rochelle Caviness).

Dogs with long hair are more perceptible to pick up, on their hair follicle, pollen and dust. If the dog owner is allergic to pollen and dust, likely have an allergic reaction near their pet. Shorter hair dogs are more suitable for those suffering from allergies or less likely to suffer. (Dog Health Resource - February 26, 2007, Learn how to choose an hypoallergenic dog.) Allergic reactions from a dog: Skin rashes, watery and itchy eyes, sneezing, and stuffy nose. Asthma Patients experience wheezing and not being able to breath deeply (i-love-dogs.com - How To Choose a Hypoallergenic Dog).

According to American Kennel Club (AKC), list a breeds of dogs non-shedding coats, and produce less dander (causes most pet allergies), for those who desire to have a dog and suffer from allergies: Bedlington Terrier,Bichon Frise, Chinese Crested, Irish Water Spaniel, Kerry Blue Terrier, Maltese, Poodles (Toy, Miniature or Standard), Portuguese Water Dog, Schanauzer (Miniature, Standard or Giant), Soft Coated Wheaten Terrier, and Xoloitzcuintli (Yahoo!
