Alli Side Effects: Drug Wreaked Havoc on My Digestive System

Lori Godin
After seeing the commercials for the popular weight loss drug, Alli, I thought it would indeed be for me. I have been struggling with weight my entire adult life, and Alli seemed like the answer that I had been seeking.

It was not long after that I called my family doctor, and was on the phone booking an appointment to go in and get a prescription for Alli. Less than an hour after the appointment I was on my way to the local pharmacy to pick up my prescription and hopefully have a tool that would effectively help me with weight loss.

The side effects that the doctor mentioned to watch for were few. He mentioned mostly digestive side effects from the drug, if you were to consume more than the recommended fat intake it could lead to a change in bowels as well as a change in appearance of my bowel movements. He had mentioned that if I were to eat anything high in fat than I could experience loose stools and diarrhea for days after. Experience diarrhea, I certainly did: one of the reasons that I stopped taking Alli.

The side effects that I had experienced were the feeling to rush to the bathroom if indeed I had consumed too much fat. It was the gassiest period of my life, and it seemed like it was wreaking havoc on my digestive system. This means, that I took the pills for less than a month before I decided that Alli wasn't for me. I couldn't deal with the side effects any longer.

After additional research to the website there were some side effects that I learned may occur, but I never experienced. The makers of Alli claim that there could be a layer of undigested fat that becomes undigested and is passed, I never experienced this. I think, that it is a very effective weight loss drug, but at what cost to your bowels? This was a little too much for me to handle, even when I was stringently adhering to the diet.
