Allison Iraheta Brings Up Some Doubt with No Doubt Tuesday Night

On Tuesday night's American Idol, Allison Iraheta took on No Doubt's smash hit Don't Speak. The 16-year-old power vocalist also showed us something else about her that we haven't seen on Idol so far this season: she can play guitar. While the riff she played isn't overly difficult, she did play it well, and she showed us she is more than just a vocalist.

Her performance of Don't Speak was done well, but it was not her strongest performance. I tend to agree with Simon when he commented he felt the song was shouted. Allison Iraheta can sing she does not need to prove that to us at all it's simple fact. But with her performance on Tuesday she was trying to hard, and it came off forced. Paula is correct in the saying that Allison's voice rivals vocalists twice her age, she does and on a great night that shows clearly. But Tuesday night was not a great night, it was only a good night.

The judges universally did not like Allison's outfit, and for once I agree with them completely. If she was trying a little too hard with her vocal her outfit was a scream for help. I like fashion and I am not even sure what to call what she had on. It was loud, distracting and drew your attention from what she was singing to what she was wearing. While in the long run the clothes shouldn't hurt her since Idol is about singing, it did not do her any favors.

Overall my review of Tuesday night's performance for Allison is lukewarm. I didn't love it and I didn't hate it. She has to be my top pick for the winner right now. But if she doesn't pick it back up and show us what she is really made of my vote will have to change. The girl can sing she just needs to not try so hard and remind us how much we love her vocals.
