The song theme for the week was popular iTunes downloads. Should have left the selections pretty wide open, right? Not the case for several of the contestants, in an episode filled with bad song choices.
Iraheta, who has in the past belted out flawless versions of Heart's "Alone" and The Temptations "Papa Was a Rollin' Stone" just did not do justice to her song pick last night.
Iraheta chose a ballad -- No Doubt's 1996 hit "Don't Speak". And although she tried to impress with some guitar playing at the beginning of her performance (who even knew she played the guitar?), she unfortunately oversang the entire song, practically screaming it in parts. Her powerful, rocker voice was simply too much for this delicate song, which is usually sung by Gwen Stefani in a kinder, gentler way.
When it came to the opinions of judges Randy Jackson, Kara DioGuardi, Paula Abdul and Simon Cowell , they just couldn't get past Iraheta's outfit either. She had an 80's Cyndi Lauper look going on, complete with a puffy red dress and a wacky spiked hairdo.
Simon quipped that she looked like "something out of the Addams Family" while Randy asked, "What are you wearing? What is with this outfit, man? I got mad love for you, but I did not get the ensemble tonight."
Kara also hinted that she is trying to play the rocker part too hard, saying "The rock in you comes out of you no matter what you are wearing."
The 16 year old seemed to take the criticism of her appearance hard. I wouldn't be surprised to see a complete makeover next week, ala Adam Lambert.
Iraheta is a strong contender on Idol and she definitely doesn't deserve to go home any time soon. She just needs to try and tone it down a bit. But unfortunately for Iraheta, a rocker at heart, the problem may be that she just can't help herself.

Post a CommentI think she did great singing the song, but her fashion needs to pick up just a tad. Then again many kids will follow what she wears anyway so it could be a new look!
