All-Purpose Paint Markers for Art and Crafts: Zig Painty Pens

For Drawing and Designing on a Variety of Surfaces

Amy Solovay
Zig Painty Pens are oil-based opaque paint markers that come in a variety of colors. Some of the colors are metallic, and some are matte. The markers come in fine point, medium point, and twin tip. There might be other configurations as well, but those are the ones I've used.

Instructions for Using Zig Painty Pens Paint Markers:

Shake the paint marker thoroughly.
Using scrap paper, push the nib of the pen several times consecutively. Repeat until the paint starts to flow.
Write with the pen.
If at any point it seems like the ink has stopped flowing, repeat these steps.

Advantages of Zig Painty Pens:

You can use them to draw or paint on a variety of surfaces, including acrylic, plastic, glass, ceramic, metal, and paper.

The paint in these markers is waterproof, lightfast, and permanent.

You can achieve some lovely effects with Zig Painty Pens. Take a look at this embossed acrylic tree shape that has been painted with Zig paint markers.

Zig Painty Pens are affordable; you can usually pick them up online for $2.49 - $5.00 plus shipping, depending on which ones you get and where you shop. The twin tip paint markers are more expensive than the others.

Disadvantages of Zig Painty Pens:

These paint markers are not suitable for use by children.

They have a strong odor, and should be used only in a well ventilated area.

They can be a little "touchy". Occasionally, one of mine will leak puddles of paint onto my project, which is annoying. To avoid this, make sure that your pen is not directly overtop of your project when you shake it and push the nib in. You should always use scrap paper when you need to get the ink flowing again.

You can click here if you'd like some additional information about how to do the embossing technique that is used with these paint markers.

You can also use the paint markers for doing detailed drawings on clear surfaces. Even if you don't know how to draw, you can still do this. Just choose a clear surface- check out Clear Scraps acrylic XXL Shapes and albums- plus a photo or a design from a royalty-free source like Dover books. Tape your photo or design down onto your work surface and place your clear surface down on top of it. You won't even need to transfer the design; you'll be able to see through the clear surface, so you can just start drawing with the paint markers.

Conclusion:

In my opinion, Zig Painty Pens are a fantastic value for the money. I use mine constantly. They are excellent all-purpose paint markers.
