All-Time Record Hottest Temperatures in New York City, Boston, Philadelphia and Washington D.C

The scorching heat wave that seared through the northeastern part of the United States on July 22, 2011, came oh so close to breaking the all-time record hottest temperatures in all the major northeastern cities. New York, Boston, Washington D.C and Philadelphia all tied their records for the second hottest temperatures ever recorded on July 22, 2011.


Here are the hottest temperatures ever recorded in the cities of New York, Boston, Philadelphia and Washington D.C. Below the cities, I've also listed the record hottest temperatures ever recorded in the respective states of the cities.

Record Hottest Temperatures in New York City, Boston, Philadelphia and Washington


New York City - 106

The hottest temperature ever recorded in New York City is 106 degrees, which occurred on July 9, 1936 in Central Park. Temperature records have been kept in New York City since 1870.

The temperature hit 104 degrees on July 22, 2011 in Central Park in New York, which is tied for the second hottest temperature ever in New York.

Boston - 104

The hottest temperature ever recorded in Boston is 104 degrees, which occurred on July 4, 1911. Temperature records have been kept in Boston, Massachusetts since 1872.

The temperature hit 103 degrees in Boston on July 22, 2011, which is tied for the second hottest temperature ever in the city.

Philadelphia - 106

The hottest temperature ever recorded in Philadelphia is 106 degrees, which occurred on August 7, 1918. Temperature records have been kept in Philadelphia since 1873.

The temperature hit 104 degrees in Philadelphia on July 22, 2011, which is tied for the second hottest temperature ever in the City of Brotherly Love.

Washington D.C. - 106

The hottest temperature ever recorded in Washington D.C. is 106 degrees, which occurred on both July 20, 1930 and August 6, 1918. Temperature records have been kept in Washington D.C. since 1878.

The temperature hit 105 degrees in Washington, D.C on July 22, 2011, which is tied for the second hottest temperature ever recorded in the nation's capital.

Record Hottest Temperature in New York State, Massachusetts Pennsylvania and Virginia


Listed here are the record hottest temperatures ever recorded in New York State, Massachusetts, Pennsylvania and Virginia. As can be seen, the record hottest temperatures in the cities are all below the record hottest temperatures for each respective state.

I'm not really sure why that is, since cities tend to be hotter than surrounding countryside. It's probably due to most of these cities being along the coast, where cooling ocean breezes sweep in and prevent record heat.


New York State - 108

The hottest temperature ever recorded in New York State is 108 degrees, which occurred on July 22, 1926 in Troy. That's two degrees hotter than New York City's all-time record.

Massachusetts - 107

The hottest temperature ever recorded in Massachusetts is 107 degrees, which occurred on August 2, 1975 in both Chester and New Bedford. That's three degrees hotter than Boston's all-time record temperature.

Pennsylvania - 110

The hottest temperature ever recorded in Pennsylvania is 110 degrees, which occurred on July 10, 1936 in Phoenixville. That's four degrees hotter than Philadelphia's all-time hottest temperature .

Virginia - 110

The hottest temperature ever recorded in Virginia is 110 degrees, which occurred on July 15, 1954 in Balcony Falls. That is four degrees hotter than Washington, D.C.'s all-time hottest temperature.
