Almost a Trip to Disney World: Road Trip Adventure

How One Missed Turned Almost Took Us to Disney World

My husband was working out of town several years ago in Albany, Georgia. We had made weekend plans to drive down from North Carolina, where we live, to visit with him. Going on the trip would be me, my 12 year old son, and my 4 year old daughter.

We packed everything we would need for the long trip and knew it would be a long day of driving with not much to see, being that I was planning to stick to interstate 95 as much as possible. We had books, crayons, baby dolls, CD players, and gameboys. Everything you can imagine to play with for this trip was crammed into my little Honda Accord. We also packed food and drinks. We had chips, cookies, candy bars, apples, gum, sodas, water, and edible gummy things like frogs and spiders.

We also packed our clothes and first aid items like, band aids, wipes, Tylenol and aspirin. But the one thing we didn't pack was a map. Imagine that, no map.

I knew the way, well most of it anyway, until we ran into a little snag. It seemed that the DOT had decided to destroy I -95 somewhere along the spot I was suppose to exit and well I guess I just didn't see any detour or alternate route so I just kept going . Miles went by and I got this feeling that something just wasn't adding up. I was going a long way and not seeing any exits. I wanted to turn around at this point but there was no place to do it.

The kids got the idea "somehow" that Mom was lost. I reassured them that you can't get lost on an interstate. My son thought the whole thing was hysterical, but my little girl became upset and was worried that we would never make it to see Daddy.

She did cheer up a bit when we passed a sign that said "Welcome to Florida", oh how terrible was this. The kids were overjoyed and had a suggestion that we go on to Disney World and call Dad from there and let him know we were lost!

I did get turned around and after several back tracking hours we arrived at our destination safe and sound. To this day the kids say it would have been a really great side stop if we had just kept going.
