Alone

Elisa Ashley
There is an anger to being alone. The fatigue, the long drawn out days and even longer nights. There, for me, was no appetite for food or the written word, no sleep and no rest at all. There was no relaxing. Alone is too difficult for one little body to be.

The hardest part of alone is having been NOT ALONE for so long. There have been many memories of happiness, warmth and laughter. There have been many hands held, many dreams shared, many fears unleashed and tamed. Without that...without the touch of a human being...everything is harder.

I yearn to be held. I hope to one day hear someone tell me I'm beautiful. I'm smart. To have another person say that they believe in me, trust me, cherish me and the time spent with me....

Alone is dark and achy and proud.

Alone is cold and hurtful and loud.

Alone is short lived, but feels like forever. Alone is too long. I don't want to be alone.

I see that your article about being alone was published in September, 2007. Are you still lonely? Maybe it's not loneliness, but depression - have you considered this fact? Do you have a pet? We are all alone at different times in life and one must realize it is a temporary situation. Use this time wisely . . . clean out your closet, update your hairstyle and get ready for the next part of your life. A new beginning is around the corner.

As someone who enjoys being alone (maybe I'm a loner; maybe I've just learned to self-entertain), I can't fathom the thought of having my most sought after asset in the world,"alone time," taken away from me. This is such a beautiful piece, and it makes you wonder a bit about a lot of stuff you thought you already knew. Some friends/acquaintances have expressed similar concerns regarding being alone, some simply saying, "I can't be alone," but saying a lot more with their intentions, than with the actual words coming out of their mouths. Keep writing, please. That's how some of us can start to relate to the world "out there."

It's better to be alone, than be lonely when you're with someone.
