Alouette Garlic & Herbs Soft Spreadable Cheese - a Review

Arlene Lynn Richard
I love cheese. Soft cheese, hard cheese, smoked cheese, cheesy crumbles, cheesy dipped whatever - I love it all. With a cheesy disguise, you can eat almost anything. I've been eyeballing Alouette's Cheeses in our town's 'fancy' grocery store for the last few weeks. Yesterday, I decided to splurge and give it a try. It took me a few minutes to decide which of the flavors I wanted to try first, they all look good! I chose the Alouette Garlic & Herbs Soft Spreadable Cheese.

This attractive product comes in a small, white, french-style ramekin cup that looks elegant and includes a cover. So much nicer than a logo-emblazoned plastic tub on your table! The Alouette Garlic & Herbs Soft Spreadable Cheese is milky white and generously littered with lots of herbs. It has a very nice consistency, spreading easily with a knife. The smell upon opening the protective covering was just so good, I nearly ate a scoop right out of the cup. It was not strong smelling at all, just a gentle whiff of something YUM!

I tried the Alouette Garlic & Herbs Soft Spreadable Cheese on toast, with my breakfast coffee. Not the typical use for cheese spread, I'm sure, but I am odd that way. I figure if cream cheese is acceptable for breakfast, why not this cheesy blessing? I used plain white toast, to make sure it did not influence the cheese taste test in any way. I tried to keep to the noted serving size of 2Tbsp. though I longed to spread it thickly.

The product spread very easily onto my warm bread. It was smooth, creamy and wow, it tasted just divine! Neither the herbs nor the garlic is at all overpowering. The cheese is not gummy or sticky and it melts into your mouth gloriously. I liked it so much, I had a second piece of toast. It is scrumptious! And my husband did not mention that I had garlicky breath when he kissed me which is a plus in my book! I'd recommend this to anyone who loves cheesy, garlicky goodness.

You can use Alouette Garlic & Herbs Soft Spreadable Cheese in a variety of ways. As stated, I thoroughly enjoyed it on toast. It would be a great addition, in it's attractive little cup, to any party platter or cheese tray. Alouette Garlic & Herbs is excellent on crackers (my kid likes this) or for use in dozens of different appetizers. It would be a good substitute for mayo on a sandwich or instead of sour cream on a baked potato! The Alouette website offers many recipes for all the different varieties, including a luscious looking Pasta Primavera. I may just have to splurge again on my next trip to the store and give that recipe a try.

Alouette Garlic & Herbs Soft Spreadable Cheese was the first variety produced by the Bongrain Group in 1974. Since then, they have added many products to the line-up, including other spreadable cheese varieties including: Berries & Cream, Creamy Onion & Shallot,Peppercorn Parmesan, Sundried Tomato & Basil. Alouette also offers several other varieties of cheese products, including a new Baby Brie Wedge. The 6.5oz package of Alouette Garlic & Herbs Soft Spreadable Cheese shown retails at this store for $5.49.

A serving of Alouette Garlic & Herbs Soft Spreadable Cheese is a standard 2 Tbsp., which was more than enough to cover my toast. There are 8 servings per 6.5oz package. Each serving is 80 calories. Total Saturated Fat is 4.5g, and 0g of Trans. Fat. This is a good choice if you're watching your carbs at 1g per serving. There is also 1g Protein, 100mg Sodium and 20mg Cholesterol per serving. As with most cheese products, you should use caution if you have milk allergies. It's Kosher status is OUD.

I give Alouette Garlic & Herbs Soft Spreadable Cheese 5 M's out of 5 for taste. Mmmmm!
