Serious Tennessee Alpaca Farmers

Who hasn't seen those alpaca farm ads on TV? In fact, they seem to be getting more frequent. With spring in full flush in the southeast, people are thinking about purchasing homes, and even country property. It's the perfect time to take off and tour some of the alpaca farms in Tennessee. Alpacas love the cooler air of the middle and eastern parts of the state. People who get into this business are absolutely thrilled with it and all sorts of corporate executives and professionals have opted for this life style in exchange for the rat race and stress of their former professions.

There are untold financial advantages to becoming an alpaca farmer. It offers a good income from stud service, selling the wool, tax relief from the many deductions allowed farmers, boarding fees for other people's alpacas, and tax-deferred wealth building. Farmers can also produce income by selling alpaca dung as a high-grade fertilizer. Some people have even invested to make money for children's and grandchildren's college education. The full advantages are too numerous to list, but they're impressive.

Windy Hills Alpacas is located on Highway 11, just 35 miles north of Knoxville in the beautiful Smokey Mountains. This 240-acre farm was just started by Mary and Wayne England in 1994. All the alpacas on this farm were from the Chilean bloodtype. They have 40 animals total with varying colors from black, brown, fawn and various shades of grey. They are members of the Alpaca Owners and Breeders Association as well as the Southeastern Alpaca Association. The fleece sold from their farm costs from $2 to $5 per ounce and the baby fleece goes for $8 per oz. They also sell prime alpaca yarn for $6 per oz. in skeins of 4 oz. each. Email them for pictures of the different colors available: hwengland@mindspring.com. Their alpaca range from around $18,000 to as high as $30,000, but they have certified and very impressive documented bloodlines. You can email them or call them at (865-767-3187) for

Alpaca Creek Farm was just started 4 years ago and is located just north of Nashville, TN. They welcome visits to the farm by people who want to take a look at their high-quality bloodline alpacas--15 in all at the present time. Two are for sale for $18,500 and $18,750 as of the day I viewed the web site. The grandfather of one of their male animals fetched $1.5 million! This is clearly a lucrative business.

Hayfield Alpaca Farm is another experienced breeder of alpacas, located between Murfreesboro and Shelbyville just 35 minutes from downtown Nashville. They have 18 registered animals on the farm now and may grow larger as time goes on. The couple has been in the alpaca business for three years. The animals they have for sale right now range from $4,900 to $17,900. Bob says that the money in this business is in the breeding and selling of animals, since there are not nearly enough to satisfy worldwide demand. There are only about 100,000 registered alpacas in the U.S. today.
