Letter of the Day Activites for the Letter M
Kids will love making masks out of paper bags. Cut large holes out of the bag for eyes then provide glue, paper, feathers, sequins, and tissue paper for decorating.
Cut various sizes and shapes of mushrooms in half and use them as stamps with tempera paint.
Make a mouse out of a half of a walnut shell. Using the slightly pointed end as the face side, glue on small googley eyes, felt ears, a small pom pom nose, and a piece of pipe cleaner for a tail.
Tape pieces of ribbon and streamers to the end of a drinking straw to make magic wands.
Active Play for the Letter M
Play a game of musical chairs. Use songs with M words in them such as Michael Row the Boat Ashore and Mary had a Little Lamb.
Sing Five Little Monkeys Jumping on the Bed and act out the jumping and falling movements of the monkeys.
Take a walk to the nearest post office or blue postal mailbox and deliver the letters written for L day to the mailbox today and let each child deposit his or her letter. Ask your students how they think it will take for the letter to get to their house.
Show the class how to march. Play a John Phillips Sousa march and provide play instruments, if desired, and march around the school.
Science Activity for the Letter M
Let the children take turns looking through a magnifying glass at a marble, macaroni, mushroom, marshmallow, and map.
Math Activity for the Letter M
Provide each child with a paper ruler and teach them how to measure objects by marking the length with a marker. Even if they cannot read the numbers yet, they can compare what things are longer or shorter.
Snack Time for the Letter M
Macaroni and cheese, muffins, and milk shakes will all be eaten as soon as you serve them. For an interactive snack, provide toothpicks and marshmallows of various colors and sizes and let the children make their own marshmallow sculptures. Serve the snack with a glass of milk.
