Alter Aeon

/A Must Try MUD

Mary Desantis

With the growth of social networking sites, like Facebook, and the overall popularity of graphical gameplay, flash games have become quite commonplace in today's society. While these games are wonderful for those who have the ability and gumption to play them, they are not the only type of game out there. MUDs (or Multi-User Dungeons) are an alternative. Text rather than graphics based and controlled by entering text commands rather than clicking on the screen, one potential upside of a MUD is that they allow players to focus more on gameplay and less on the imagery of the game. MUDs are also ideal for the visually impaired, a group of people for whom flash games are virtually impossible.

By far, the most visually impaired friendly and fun MUD I have come across is Alter Aeon. Based in a medieval fantasy world, Alter Aeon offers its players a wide variety of monsters to kill and quests to complete. The game also offers areas specifically designed to help those new to the game or mudding understand how gameplay works.

"What if I like the socialization that goes along with my flash games?" No problem. Alter Aeon has a variety of channels that can be used for casual, game related, or role playing conversations. The game also features a "tell" communication option, which allows players to send a private message to another player who is logged on, and an in-game e-mail system.

"I'm blind. Can I really play?" Yes. Alter Aeon has a very up-front attitude about accessibility. From the front page of the game's website, it is made clear that the game is playable by the visually impaired. The site also boasts a Visually Impaired Support Page that lists various clients and script sets that blind players can download to make the game accessible. There are also in-game settings that make gameplay easier for visually impaired players, such as a "blind mode" and several spam filters that control the amount of text in the game output window.

Alter Aeon is a MUD not to be missed. With quests and monsters, equipment and skills, spells and more, it is a rare day where players are bored in Alter Aeon. If this sounds like your type of game, give it a try! Alter Aeon is completely free to play, and players can login whenever they want. All the information you need to get started can be found at the Alter Aeon Website. Fun, free, and easy to learn, start playing Alter Aeon today!
