Altering Sex on Their Birth Certificate? is that Legal?

What's next to change? Let's change our sex legally! Will we be able to change our birth date in the near future too? The Bend Bulletin printed an article titled "NYC may OK plans to alter certificates". Inquisitiveness pulled me in. My first thought "what? Names can already be changed legally, so what do they want to alter now."
According to the article, NYC may permit people, within the city, the right to modify their birth certificate sex without having had a sex change operation. This is just ludicrous.
If this is passed by the city health board, the person wishing to alter their birth certificate will have to provide affidavits from a mental health provider and a doctor stating why it is imperative their patient be judged a member of the opposite sex and declare the change permanent without the sex change itself. So even though Fred has breasts and a vagina, she is considered to be a male because her newly altered birth certificate states gender as male.
I am not sure how others feel about this topic but it sounds unjustified. Is this a ploy for gay marriage to become legal because now the person is considered a member of the opposite sex and it states so on a legally altered document? You are born male or female and it should not be altered on a legal document.
People can live as they choose but falsifying and altering legal documents should not be right. Soon we will be able to alter our birthdates because we see ourselves as an Aries sign rather than a Gemini. Or better yet, we don't want to be 50! So if, we get affidavits signed by mental health and a doctor, stating this could be detrimental to our emotional and physical well-being, if the date we were born is not altered. Does this sound right?
Will we be able to change our social security number as well because, now it does not match up with the birth certificate sex and name? Oh, cool that means we get a whole new credit file too?
What is this world coming to? If you want a sex change well then by all rights have one because this is a free country but when it comes to altering legal documents to this extreme is unethical.
Its unclear what the underlying reason is for having this done but my first thought after reading this article was gay marriages. Vote and get gay marriage passed if that's what the people of our society want as a whole, but don't use loop holes because that is just wrong.

Post a CommentI think the only way this should be allowed is if a genetic test proves your gender was marked wrong at birth. Genes don't lie--that is what you are! If you hate it, deal with it! If you think you are the other gender, get some mental help! Society needs to stop trying to accept mental problems and correct them instead.
What about the people born intersexed who are born somewhere between male and female on a biological level whose attending delivery physicians arbitrarily chose a sex? That's about one in every two thousand people mind you. Should they get to change their gender on their birth certificate when their real gender gets figured out? I know one such woman who lives near Chicago. Born with ambiguous genitals, they sewed her vagina shut and re-routed her urethra. They gave her testosterone injections to make her "undersize penis" grow and to cause her to develop like a man in puberty. They guessed wrong. Genetic tests show she is XX - 100% female as far as her genes and her mind are concerned but she got railroaded into the wrong body. Should she have to be called a man the rest of her life (genetically 100% female remember) or should she be able to get surgery to fix her apparent gender and get to get her inaccurate birth certificate changed to female?

You're incredibly ignorant, but your first point remains valid. Transexuals should only be allowed to change it when they DO alter their bodies and change their sex because that is logical- They changed their sex. You want to know why so bad? Look it up and stop being so incompetent, making yourself look like a fool. These people just want to live as the opposite sex, and your birth certificate is something you have to show to quite a few places which can cause embarrassment and unnecessary problems/harassment/discrimination. Without changing it, the person can not change his or her passport either. Let's say a woman, who got her male genitalia replaced, and is and looks just like a woman is supposed to travel with her passport saying "male". It's ridiculous and it's sad how there are people out there who feel the need to write about what they don't understand, and then complain about it when they didn't bother researching it in the first place.
