Alternate Paper Bag Uses

Not Just for Brown Bagging it Anymore

Lori Piper
Do you remember as a child brown bagging your lunch to school every day, except on pizza day?
Nowadays paper bags do not get a great deal of use from us.

Plastic has taken over. In fact, now, when I take my lunch to work it is typically in a Tupperware container, inside a plastic bag.

Paper bags are no longer for lunch anymore.

Does that mean they no longer have uses? Absolutely not! In fact, my sister purchased over five hundred of them one year and they are what she decorates and gives homemade food items in every year. (Even doling out some to family members, she still has over three hundred.)

What other uses can paper bags have?

Alternate paper bag uses #1

A roll refresher. Wet a paper bag, and wring it out. Place the stale rolls inside of the bag and bake at 350 degrees F for approximately ten minutes. Your reward from this brown bag? Moist insides and a crispy crust.

Alternate paper bag uses #2

Herbs! Dry herbs inside a bag. The darkness keeps the herbs tastier and more flavorful, as light can harm flavor. The closed bag keeps them dust free as well out of a pet's curiosity.

Has someone given you are a gorgeous bouquet of flowers that you cannot wait to show off? (You can even get yourself a bouquet.) Yet, the only vase you have left is clouded and dull. When you go to place the flowers in the vase, and all you can do is focus on the vase, what can you do?

Fill the vase with pieces from a torn bag, add water, and leave it to soak overnight. In the morning, dump out the paper to reveal a clean shiny vase.

Have you gone to prepare a dinner salad only to discover the fruit has become over ripe? A trick to slow down ripening is to immediately place the fruit inside a paper bag upon entering into your kitchen. By bagging the, ethylene gases are trapped, slowing down the ripening time. Dinner salad on your time, not the fruit's.

Alternate paper bag uses #5
Paper bags work like wax paper and can remove candle wax. Simply cover the dripped wax with a bag, pass a warm iron over the bag. Continue until all the wax is gone.

Alternate paper bag uses #6

Clean artificial flowers. Place flowers inside the bag, along with one fourth cup salt. Shake gently, and upon opening the bag, the flowers will be dust free and look like new.

Alternate paper bag uses #7

Do you reside in a high humidity area? Storing bread in a paper bag, rather than a plastic bag, allows the bread to remain fresher longer.

Alternate paper bag uses #8

Use as compost filler. Earthworms enjoy paper bags almost as much as cardboard. Shred some paper bags, wet them pieces, and then place around your garden.

I hadn't thought of these uses for brown paper bags. I almost always choose paper bags when out shopping though so I can do my bit for the environment.
