Alternative Anxiety Treatments: 2 that You Can Use Starting Today

LD Ballard
You have been diagnosed with anxiety disorder. Your doctor probably prescribed some prescription medication for you. Before you fill that prescription it might be a wise idea to check the side effects. There are many, with "suicidal tendencies" being prevalent in most of them.

What's a person supposed to do? That is an individual decision but a lot of people have tried alternative anxiety treatments and have found great success with them.

What are some of them, you might ask?

First of all, discussing all the available alternative anxiety treatments is beyond the scope of this short article. Let's discuss two of them that you can use immediately to help you get the relief you are looking for.

Meditation:

Most people that have symptoms of anxiety generally bombard themselves with almost constant negative self talk. All day long your mind is probably flooded with feelings and upsetting thoughts. These thoughts generally are of unresolved things about your health, finances, or personal and work relationships.

Unfortunately, the more you think on them, the bigger they get. They snowball out of proportion and reinforce all your anxiety symptoms and almost totally exhaust you.

Wouldn't you agree that being able to stop that inner dialogue so you can quiet your mind is important?

You don't have to chant if you don't want to. Simply pick one object and focus all your attention on it. Slowly relax your muscles one section of your body at a time. As your muscles relax, release those tensions one at a time.

When you empty your mind, and allow yourself to completely relax, it helps heal your entire body.

When you are in this deep relaxed state, your metabolism slows as well as your heart rate and blood pressure. You feel your muscle tension decreasing.

If you practice this regularly, it will help relieve your anxiety by turning off negative and upsetting thought patterns as well as resting your mind.

Deep Breathing:

This is probably the easiest alternative anxiety treatment there is. Slow, abdominal breathing (breathing with your belly, not your chest) not only stops, but in a lot of cases, prevents anxiety attacks. When you breathe this way, all your bodily functions normalize.

Simply put, breathe in deep through your nose (this almost forces you to breathe with your abdomen), hold it for four seconds, then exhale slowly through your mouth. As you exhale, let your mind start slowing down, getting rid of all the negativity.

You can do this breathing exercise anywhere, even driving.

As you can see, relieving or even eliminating your anxiety symptoms does not have to be difficult. You do not have to rely on dangerous prescription medications.
