Alternative and Complimentary Medicine to Help Control Ulcerative Colitis Symptoms

Trying to cope with the symptoms of ulcerative colitis can sometimes lead sufferers to think outside of the box in order to find relief. Alternative and complimentary medicine can help some ulcerative colitis sufferers.

Aromatherapy is one alternative medicine technique that can help ulcerative colitis sufferers. I use this form of alternative medicine on a daily basis, even when my ulcerative colitis is in remission.

I use lavender or vanilla to help me relax especially after a stressful day. I have noticed that this helps me reduce the number of flare ups and the severity of flare ups. In my case, stress seems to be a trigger for a flare up. When I am relaxed, my body digests food better.

When I find myself tired during a flare up, I use peppermint or lemon grass to pep me up if I need to stay awake. The scent is invigorating.

One of the main telltale signs that I am starting to flare up is that I get extremely tired without reason. When I notice this starting, I use the peppermint and lemon grass while I am exercising. This combination gives me the energy that I need to go about my daily tasks.

I have, in the past, used acupressure to help control the symptoms of my ulcerative colitis. This is especially helpful to alleviate the stomach and back pain that are associated with a flare up.

If this is something that you want to try, it is a good idea to find a mobile practitioner who can treat you in the comfort of your home if your treatment will be during a flare up. It may be very difficult, uncomfortable or close to impossible for you to make the journey to her office if you are in the middle of a bad flare up.

With the help of your health care professional, you can explore the use of herbal supplements to work with your regular medications to help control ulcerative colitis. Many herbs, such as aloe vera juice are said to have anti-inflammatory powers. These herbs may help to lessen the frequency and severity of flare ups.

A word of caution about using herbal supplements to control ulcerative colitis, it is important that you consult with your health care professional about interactions between your prescriptions and any herbal supplement you are considering. Some combinations can cause your diarrhea to worsen.

As anyone who suffers from ulcerative colitis is aware of, there is no one cure that will work for every sufferer. It takes a multifaceted treatment plan to deal with ulcerative colitis. You have to try different combinations of treatments to find out what works for you. This can get frustrating but if you keep at it, you will find the plan that works for you.
