Alternative Education Methods for Your Child

Carrie Lowe
While most parents think that education involves simply giving their child an exhaustive array of information that they need to know, there are actually many really good reasons why you should instead think about an alternative method. By allowing your family to explore these options you can not only open the world to more options, but also really gain a good idea of how much your child knows, and what grade level they should actually be placed at.

Using the benefits of alternative educational methods to your benefits will often reduce the stress of schooling, help your child to further explore ideas and concepts that are most interesting to them, and also enable you to really take a step back and observe how well they actually know the concepts that are being covered.

Your first option is called unschooling. This comes in many forms and ranges from absolutely no structure, to a very mild structure. The child is who determines what they learn, when, for how long and when they are finished with it. Often children who are unschooled will have several passions that they are deeply interested in and will begin to seriously explore those passions when permitted to which can allow for a much deeper level of understanding, as well as the opportunity to explore topics in much more detail than would typically be permitted in a traditional school setting.

Your other option is allowing your child to teach you. This is typically best when used as a means to test the knowledge that your child has. By allowing them to teach you what they know, they are reinforcing their own skills in an area, as well as demonstrating that they understand it well enough to instruct someone else. Many parents who home school opt for this rather than conventional testing because siblings can be substituted for the parent which enables you to easily develop a deeper sense of what they know, since they are not nervous about teaching you, but rather someone that they likely feel much more comfortable with.

Never think that you must stand by a chalkboard to teach your child. By allowing them to demonstrate what they know, and take an active role in their own education you will be quickly surprised at what they can actually do. Covering all of the aspects of your child's education is not necessary, nor is it required in order to really understand what your child knows, so consider exploring an alternative method and you will likely see your child grow before your eyes.
