Once I obtained my mother's medical record I saw the diagnosis had changed to "End Stage Emphysema." I had been researching emphysema but had found nothing that provided any hope for survival. Most of the sites I found on the internet were pharmaceutical sites claiming that if you took their drugs it would slow the progress of the disease.
My question was why was the disease progressing at all in the absence of smoking. I understood that smoking was the cause of my mother's emphysema along with millions of other emphysema sufferers worldwide. I remember seeing an article detailing a lawsuit where a lady that had quit smoking 20 years earlier had won a large reward from the tobacco companies. No one could answer what it was that was causing the disease progression. It certainly was not smoking.
When something is removed from the equation it is no longer a factor. It is like draining the water from a swimming pool and then claiming someone drowned in the pool. Something was growing or proliferating in the lungs of emphysema patients in the absence of smoking but no one knew what it was or how to stop it. All they could do with their drugs was slow it down.
Researching pathology I found that the food supply for all pathogens was sugar. If we removed all sugar from a patient's diet could we then starve this unknown pathogen or weaken it enough so the immune system could kill it and stop the progression of the disease? I was not sure but my mother did not have much time left and I knew removing sugar from her diet would not hurt her. I remembered from Biochemistry that grains and other simple carbohydrates were broken down into sugar in only a few biochemical steps by the body.
I immediately removed all sugar and simple carbohydrates from my mother's diet. She was down to only 77 pounds and required 4 liters of supplemental oxygen. Even on 4 liters of supplemental oxygen she was gasping for air most of the time. She could only sleep for an hour or two and only if I propped her up on 4 pillows. She could only eat very small meals or it would negatively affect her breathing. She truly did not have much time left.
Amazingly, in only two weeks my mother was making improvements from this simple change in diet. The improvements were quite subtle but they were there. She was still on 4 liters of oxygen but rarely showed any signs of distress. She could sleep for 3 hours at a time and could eat about twice what she had been consuming only two weeks earlier. Image 1 at the right is my mother in September of 2007 a few months after her recovery began. She is still wearing the cannula attached to the oxygen concentrator machine.
The significance of this one little improvement told me that the medical and pharmaceutical industries were not doing all that could be done in helping these emphysema patients. They had not even mentioned this simple biochemical fact that pathogens ate sugar and they had not acknowledged the obvious which was that something was growing or proliferating in her lungs.
I was very inspired by this tiny improvement and it spurred more than 3000 additional hours of research into pathology, mycology, biochemistry and optimal health. Less than 18 months later with the help of an osteopath, my mother recovered from emphysema completely. That is she did not require any supplemental oxygen. She could sleep 6 to 8 hours without waking and she could eat a full plate of food with no distress. Image 2 shows my mother in December of 2008 at her 76th birthday party after her complete recovery.
I developed six general protocols that facilitated this reversal of emphysema and detailed them in a book about my mother's struggles and eventual recovery from emphysema. Since that time over 1100 people worldwide have used these protocols and have either reversed their emphysema or are in the process of doing so.
My web sites now detail other protocols from the book.
Currently, emphysema is considered the 4th leading cause of death by the World Health Organization.
