Alternative Entertainment in the City of Sin

Eric Diebel
Welcome to beautiful Las Vegas, NV. There are plenty of places here to wile-away the hours lighting your money on fire and plenty of big production shows to see. I won't attack any of those shows, as some are quite good, but if you are a jaded Vegas resident, frequent visitor, or just have slightly more exotic tastes you may want to check out these fine alternative entertainment options.

Number one thing to see is Mistress Rowynn's BDSM demonstration on August 19th. She seems to be about as up and coming as a Dominatrix can be, and her show promises to be both informative and entertaining. She has a YouTube show (www.youtube.com/mistressrowynn) and a blog (www.MistressRowynn.blogspot.com) that update fairly regularly, and has appeared on local internet radio show, Spankwagon. I guess that qualifies her as some kind of local celebrity in the BDSM community. There promises to be a live demonstration on a rather attractive young lady, as well as a Q&A section and a chance to meet the Mistress after the show. She seems energetic and knowledgeable, so whether you are an old pro or just a curious wanderer there should be something for you here.

Word on the street is that if things go well at this show it may become a regular fixture. So go buy tickets at www.onyxtheatre.com, they are just ten dollars. Onyx Theatre is in the back of The Rack in Commercial Center off of Sahara. Directions are of course available on their site, so I won't worry about repeating them here.

The Onyx also offers a show called Karnival every 2nd and 4th Saturday of the month. It's basically a next generation carnival side show. A lot of the fun of the show comes from the mystery involved in each act and the little guessing games and anticipations between performers, so I won't detail them. Suffice it to say that you will shocked, entertained and titillated. Again, only ten dollars, and far more unique than a movie. Makes a great date screener as well. Bring your date along and if they freak out and try to make a break through the back door or squeal uncontrollably the whole time you know their constitutions just aren't going to hold up to your adventurous and accepting spirit.

If you're tired of staying in boring, sterilized hotel rooms you may want to check out the bed and breakfast options in Las Vegas as well. One of our own Associated Content writers does a good overview of them in this article: http://www.associatedcontent.com/article/939975/overview_of_5_bed_and_breakfasts_in.html?cat=16

Back to entertainment. Check out the Double Down Saloon off of Paradise. There is always some kind of band or show or arty thing going on and it will give you a chance to dress as angrily as you possibly can. I suppose you could dress as ironically as possible as well, if that's more your thing.

You can also try an ass juice or bacon martini. Both of these bizarre, if not disgusting drinks are unique, and quite tasty. Don't forget to buy the vomit insurance if you intend to overindulge though. Cleaning up vodka and bacon grease while a giant plastic cockroach sculpture looks over your head isn't an ideal way to spend a night pretty much anywhere, much less Vegas.

The fringes of First Fridays, held on the first Friday of every month, can also hold some interesting little nuggets of fun. I once sang a harmony for a band consisting of a man with a ukulele in a vest made from rubber chickens and a very attractive Asian girl with a child's toy drum set. The art in some of the smaller places also tends to be a little darker and a little more interesting. The snacks and drinks also tend to not have been picked over quite so thoroughly if you are getting a bit peckish or losing your well-crafted buzz.

These are my suggestions. Try to check them out, and who knows maybe you'll see me there and we can be super secret internet friends for a night and then never, ever tell anybody else about it ever.

I am a film student at UNLV spewing out skewed reviews and news from the darker side of Las Vegas. The occasional recipe or something may pop up from time to time as well. I try and keep things fun, so try...  View profile
