Alternative Healing at Risk with John McCain's Proposed Dietary Supplements Bill

Healing Herbs a Threat

Deborah Oakes, NPS
Alternative healing is at risk with John McCain's new dietary supplement bill. Basically, it affords regulation of herbs and vitamins to the Federal Drug Administration (FDA). Coast-to-Coast just released a recording yesterday about John McCain's proposed bill.

Healing Herbs and Food a Threat

Alternative healing includes holistic therapy, healing herbs, complementary and alternative medicine and vitamins. With this bill, even a supplement with ½ carrot's worth of beta carotene is considered within need of regulation. While I was growing up, I had a friend whose grandmother was still mad because she could no longer grow poppies. It was illegal and she used to make her family's medicine from the flowers. Now, this knowledge is lost forever. Do we want to risk losing our rights and knowledge?

FDA? You Gotta Be Kidding

Anybody that read Charles Krauthammer's Washington Post editorial just today, about television drug commercials where he states, "15 seconds of therapeutic uses of drugs and 45 seconds of side-effects including, erection for 4 hours and sudden death", knows the FDA pushes drugs. Do we really want them guarding food and herbs?

Holistic Therapy Down the Tubes

The bill also requires: a) minor effects to be reported which opens the door to FDA authorization to pull products from store shelves and b) new ingredients are considered adulterated, thus squashing new discoveries. Just recently, the FDA yanked from the market a supplement based on just a couple of alleged adverse event reports without even allowing the company (an old and respected firm) to provide counter-evidence or counter-argument.

Contact Legislators to Protect Alternative Healing

If your response is hell no, then contact your legislators and ask they not support The Dietary Supplement Safety Act (DSSA). The John Birch Society offers an easy-to-use form and a way to let your friends know about this bill. My freedom to take care of my own health with natural substances is at threat. And so is yours.

Complementary and Alternative Medicine

Healing herbs and food have been around for centuries. Let's not let them fall into regulation by an agency that pushes drugs and over-regulates food. Holistic therapy, herbs for health and vitamins are at threat for our future
use in alternative healing.

Good old John McCain seems to be always up to something in favor of pharmaceutical industry.

You make valid points Not fooled and there are surely companies selling supplements that ought to be shut down. But, I'd rather not regulate and leave it up to the consumer to do their own research.

Yes, let's not regulate these products by requiring taht they be shown to be safe and effective. Its hard to sell snake oil after evidence has been produced that shows it is worthless. Don't be fooled by claims that the "pharma" companies want to shut this industry down. The real financial incentive is with those that oppose regulation because it would limit their ability to sell hope instead of cures.

I signed the petition because I believe in natural cures! I don't want vitamins & herbs to be taken from us. Please do a follow-up article to make sure everyone is alerted Deborah! Drugs are not the answer and they never have been!

Drug companies and those that live in their pockets have been trying to make laws (protecting us - ha, ha)against vitamins and herbs for as long as I can remember. It's always a threat that they could actually succeed. Oh my gosh, what if McCain had become president? What else woudl he be doing?

I actually used to respect John McCain. I certainly would have picked him over Bush in the 2000 primaries, if I had been a Republican...but times and people change.

Wonderful work as always, Deborah! Thank you!

Wow, I didn't realize exactly how this would impact us. Thanks for the excellent report.

Too much regulation ups the prices too!
