Hormone replacement therapy is prescribed by many doctors to relieve the symptoms of menopause. The most widely prescribed hormone replacement therapy is a synthetic hormone created in a laboratory, developed to act like natural hormones in the body. There is much controversy concerning the purported benefits of man made hormone therapy products.
The results of many studies reveal pros and cons on the use of hormone replacement therapy. Some believe that the benefits outweigh the harmful affects, while others claim that the use of these unnatural products are very harmful.
Earlier studies claimed that hormone replacement therapy would lower the risk of osteoporosis, heart disease, and some forms of cancer, however, the results of these studies have proven that this may not be the case for all women.
After a surgical hysterectomy a woman's body is forced into menopause regardless of her age. The symptoms of natural menopause that occurs in many women may include, hot flashes, mood swings, migraines, vaginal dryness and lower libido.
Some laboratory tests have shown negative side affects such as higher incidents of colon cancer, blood clots, and stroke using hormone replacement therapy. Synthetic hormones are also risky when taken by oral methods because the estrogen must pass through the liver before entering the blood stream.
Another method of hormone replacement therapy is applied through a trans-dermal patch. The patch is less risky because the estrogens are absorbed directly into the blood stream without compromising the liver. One problem with the hormone patch is the adhesive which can irritates the skin at the patch site, causing a rash and itching. The patch is usually reapplied every five to seven days. It is expensive and the wearer must avoid tanning beds when wearing the patch.
An option to hormone replacement therapy is the use of Mexican Wild Yam for a natural way to relieve menopausal symptoms without the cost of prescription drugs. Mexican Wild Yam is available as a cream or a gel, which is applied daily to the soft areas of your body, such as the tummy, the thighs, or the upper arms. The natural estrogen in the yam will be instantly absorbed through your skin and into your bloodstream without compromising your liver. The yam nourishes and moisturizes the skin which also makes it an excellent face cream.
Most vitamin shops, health food stores, or online health and vitamin supply sites will have several brands to choose from.
Discuss with your doctor concerning risks and benefits of Mexican Wild Yam as a healthier option to the use of pharmaceutical hormone replacement therapy.
