Alternative Medicine: Choosing Something Better Than the "Alternative"

Nathan Schilaty, DC
Alternative medicine is widely misunderstood by the American society. The fact is, therapies that are classified as "alternative" in the United States are actually mainstream therapies that are used throughout the world and that have been utilized with success for thousands of years! Numerous "alternative" therapies are widely researched scientifically and provide the patient with excellent results. All these excellent results rely upon the innate healing ability of the body and many of the processes require patience as healing takes time. Time, unfortunately, is what most people do not want to experience; they want immediate results!

Conventional medicine, also known as allopathic medicine, really began in the early 1900's with the advent of large pharmaceutical companies. Before pharmaceutical companies began to supply funding, medical schools taught therapies that were natural and that were utilized successfully for hundreds of years. In fact, 22 medical schools in the early 1900's taught homeopathy (including Boston University, New York Medical College, and Stanford University) until pharmaceutical companies and the American Medical Association (AMA) began to suppress the success of homeopathic remedies!

Due to the oppression of functional and effective natural therapies in mainstream medical schools, the only therapies taught at medical schools were ones that made money - especially for the pharmaceutical industry. Therapies such as artificial chemicals (pharmaceuticals), surgery, and irradiation were touted as viable therapies - even when Hippocrates, the "Father of Medicine" clearly stated, "Let food be thy medicine, and thy medicine thy food!"

Please do NOT misunderstand - conventional medicine has its place. Allopathic therapies are very valuable in emergency situations. But, much can be done on a day-to-day basis to prevent disease and to treat disease before it becomes an emergency.

Consider the disease of cancer. The therapies from allopathic or conventional medicine for cancer include: chemotherapy, irradiation, or surgery. Does that even make sense? Why would you douse the human body with massive amounts of chemicals or irradiation to cure cancer?!? The chemicals kill the needed healing systems of the body and irradiation mutates healthy cells as well. Clearly, these methods of "treating disease" are not that scientific! Even surgery is a massive bombardment to the integrity of the human body. Even though it can have huge successes, there are many surgeries that harm the body more than it helps. Remember, Hippocrates stated, "First, do no harm!" Conventional medicine clearly disregards the initial philosophies upon which they were founded.

Now, pharmaceuticals, surgery, or irradiation may not always be a bad decision, but most often it is the wrong decision. The human body is miraculous - it is self-healing. The therapies that the body desires are complementary to its innate healing abilities: massage, chiropractic adjustments, cold laser therapy, neurolymphatic therapy, reiki, qi gong, meditation, reflexology, acupuncture meridian stimulation, neurovascular therapy, physical therapy, neuromuscular reeducation, detoxification, homeopathy, and nutrition! Once the impedances of healing are cleared, the body will heal on its own and will maintain itself from disease. This is not an "alternative" viewpoint, but rather science-based knowledge of the human anatomy and physiology. Alternative medicine it not "alternative", it is a necessity. Much of conventional medicine would have you believe otherwise for monetary reasons, but now the ball is in your court; play the game to win by utilizing the therapies that help the body heal itself!
