Alternative Medicine Can Be Helpful in Infertility

When Modern Medicine Has You Frustrated, There Are Other Options

Mary Frederick
I recognize that the amount of time we tried to conceive is not that long compared to others, but each month seemed like an eternity. We tried for six months, which actually falls in the "normal" amount of time--but to me I felt a little part of me just crumble each month that it didn't happen. I was thrilled when it did and I attribute a big part of that to my willingness to open my mind and try some alternative treatments. I have friends that have been very successful in alternative treatments and have recommended these to many, I hope to keep telling others about this so that they don't have to give up hope when modern medicine doesn't work for them. I'm all for medicine and treatments when they help and there is a big place for them in our society, but for me personally I needed another avenue--and so too have many others that I have come across.

If you've read any of my other articles, then you know that I've tried and loved acupuncture. Though I didn't start going to see the acupuncturist for fertility to begin with, I did end up trying it for that purpose. I had such great luck with acupuncture to help with my stomach issues--I am going on two years without any stomach medication and that's after eight years of being on a constantly changing roller coaster of different kinds. You might think that acupuncture sounds hurtful or scary or even crazy--but to me it was my saving grace. After seeing how it had so positively affected my stomach issues, I just had to try it for fertility. What did I have to lose? At this point I had come to welcome acupuncture as a part of my life, and rather enjoyed the time where all I could do was sit there, relax and meditate while the needles did their work. In my case, the needles were put in my lower abdomen and the small of my back, with various pressure points hit along the way. It was a relaxing experience through and through--and I even opened my mind to the tea that I was prescirbed. I would say that the tea is the worst part, but knowing that it could offer benefits made it worth the trouble to me. You brew it at home on your own and just as it looks like dirt and twigs, it tastes like it too! I was very open minded about the whole process and just let my internal instincts guide me through the whole experience.

This led me to reiki, and I came across this by accident. I was at a resort on vacation and some of my friends and I went for massages. By some twist of fate, I ended up with a massage therapist that also specialized in reiki. I had never heard of it before then, but as I was deep into acupuncture I tried it. Reiki is all about the focus on the various energy zones in your body (7 in total), and a reiki master focuses their energy on your various zones to see if any of the zones are blocked. Blocked zones can mean a number of things, but can attribute greatly to fertility issues--the practice of reiki goes hand in hand with acupuncture. I am certainly no master on the subject, but I can tell you that it was such a powerful and moving experience that I sought out somebody that did it locally and went for another session.

These alternative practices unfortunately don't come cheap (anywhere between $60-85 per treatment), but I can tell you that in my experience they were worth every penny. I opened my mind and my heart to these alternative practices and believe that they along with prayer are what brought me my baby girl. I would highly recommend either practice to anyone and hope that they work for others as they have for me.

Good luck!
