Alternative Medicine - Herbalism

Sam Carson
Herbalism is defined as the use of plants (herbs) as medicine. Human beings have used plants as medicines for many thousands of years. While modern medicine has given us many wonderful treatments and cures, it has not been able to cure all the illnesses of humanity, certainly not at reasonable costs.

Herbalism, also known as herbal medication and herbology is an ancient style of traditional medications used by the ancient Chinese to cure any ailment that was put before them. They believe that some plants do hold the powers of healing. The first concept of using herbs as medicines dates back to caves in France between 13,000 and 25,000 BCE. Scientists over time concluded that using herbs and plants was truly the only way to heal the sick.

In this role was the Shaman, he was the person who villagers believed had the power to cure the sick with herbs that were tainted with a special type of healing powers given to the Shaman through the spirit world. The Shaman does still exist today in places like Africa and South Africa. Plants have what they call an aromatic substance, this produces phenols. Combined with alkaloids and metabolites the phenols can act as a healing agent.

The use of herbs and plants to treat diseases is a very common theory spread around the world. Today they are known as alternative medicines. Modern day traditional drugs are taken from some plants and herbs. Herbal medicine became dominate in the Greek, Roman, Indian and Chinese cultures. The most respected is the Chinese, they have proven that their herbal medicines do work and they do know the secret to healing with herbs.

There are more alternative medicine centers around today than ever before. Some people do not believe in the traditional type of medicine, so they turn to herbalism. They believe that these plants can help them. Most doctors are very skeptical and are concerned that people are not getting the treatment they need because they believe that these herbs are going to cure them.

People have to understand that if traditional medicines cannot cure a disease then a plant is not going to be able to do the same. However, it can help with the pain and give you a treatment but they will not offer you a cure. It cannot hurt to take these herbs and get some relief but keep in mind that these are not cures and if you have a serious medical condition, you must see a doctor and get medical advice.
