Alternative Medicine: Is it Right for You?

Dean Ing
Alternative medicine has gained enormous popularity in the last decade, and a huge range of choices can be quite confusing; it is important to understand what is right for you. Unfortunately, because there is profit involved as with most enterprises, there is a lot of misleading information, and quite simply, products that do not deliver. These days, some forms of alternative medicine treatments are covered by your medical insurance such as therapeutic massage, osteopathic therapy and chiropractic. These and other forms of alternative medicine are now widely used and an accepted form of treatment. A trip to the chiropractor, for many, is as routine as a trip to the dentist and a necessary part of their own regular health regime.

Alternative medicine, used in conjunction with conventional medicine, can give relief to many, many conditions and more traditional physicians these days are turning to alternative medical remedies. Before prescribing heavier drugs. As an example, a friend of mine recently suffered a recurring chest infection and the doctor prescribed him olive leaf extract and also a course of antibiotics. The antibiotics work to kill the infection and the olive leaf extract used to prevent its return. Olive leaf extract has a long history of its antibacterial qualities.

Alternative medicine has its roots in thousands of years of tradition, and it is only now that we are realising the health benefits of many of the herbs available to us and in common use for example, fresh parsley has been found to be extremely high in vitamins C and iron, two very essential vitamins for our well-being. The key difference between conventional medicine and alternative medicine is that traditional medicine tends to treat the symptom where as alternative medicine attempts to treat the root cause and use a preventative approach, which when one thinks about it is just common sense.

Unfortunately, many fads have sprung up around alternative medicine, and some of this is indeed pure quackery. It is not wise to self medicate even with herbs. You should talk to your physician, and also do some research. The Internet is a wonderful place to start and don't forget your local library, in the long run this will prevent needless expense, many of these newer treatments can cost an arm and leg. Several years ago, an acquaintance of mine spent several thousand dollars on various prescribed herbal medicines. She would go from one practitioner to another purchasing anything they recommended. When that did not work, she would go on to the next one during a routine health checkup. It was found she had a thyroid condition only treatable by conventional medicine.

Common ailments such as backpain and migraines are all treatable with a very high success rate with alternative medicine, and are also many forms of treatment available for the terminally ill, who do not wish to pursue traditional drugs and chemotherapy. Aromatherapy, sound therapy, colonic cleansing and body detoxification have become very popular with ever increasing numbers of people who discover the beneficial effects of these treatments.

Do some research and find out what is right with you, and as previously mentioned. Always check with your physician before embarking on any form of alternative therapy. Most herbs are relatively harmless, but some do have side effects on people with various conditions such as liver or kidney or asthmatic problems or pregnancy. Find health and be well.
