Alternative Medicine for Ulcerative Colitis is Not Quackery!

Gary Davis
I used to think that alternative medicine belonged somewhere between a voodoo doll and a medicine show. However, great gains have been made in many areas of life that include alternative medicine as well as chiropractic medicine.

Alternative medicine actually pays a little more attention to the mind as well as the body. However, there is no denying that some of the alternative treatments are effective

I have used Mylanta and Valium in conjunction with meditation. Simply clearing my mind and thinking about non stress-related issues has gone a long way in reducing my problems with ulcerative colitis.

The main initial treatment for bringing ulcerative colitis under control is the use of steroids. They are supposed to stop swelling and inflammation; however, they also compromise the immune system and can cause weight gain. A person promoting alternative medicine might suggest an increase in the use of Vitamin C which also battles inflammation without the undesirable effects of steroids.

The more I study and use organic fruits and vegetables the more I believe in them They don't have the chemicals used for growing that can irritate the bowel I was surprised that alternative medicine suggests not even using packaged or frozen fruits and vegetables (even organic) because the preservatives also have adverse effects.

One of the most dramatic discoveries has been the incredible success with fish oils; not just with ulcerative colitis but many other diseases. Remember that the oils and the organic approach are protecting the liver. That protects the gallbladder and bile duct which eases digestion and helps the bowel.

As I said, alternative medicine considers the total body including the mind; therefore the use of such practices as Yoga and meditation are often employed. Since stress is a proven problem with respect to flares, the ability to keep one's mind focused away from the illness aids in keeping the bowel calmed down.

Of course it isn't just alternative medicine's idea, but again, water, water and more water is so important! Exercise is so important.

One of the greatest dangers a person with ulcerative colitis has is the danger of malnutrition; then not being able to fight the disease. Using the alternative medicine approach, at least to some degree, minimizes compromising the body's immune system and at the same time aids in building up the body by using the most important needed nutrition in the least offensive way to the bowel.

As I said, alternative medicine used to be considered sort of well, quackery, however, now we are seeing that the way to get help doesn't have to be a medication.
