Alternative Medicine Works

Julie Michael
Alternative medicine works, and it works quite well when it, like any other type of medicine, is used properly. I am no doctor, nor do I have an official training in medicine or alternative medicine, but I have personally used alternative remedies with good results.

It's absolutely essential that you research any remedies you are considering, find out potential side effects or interactions, and maybe even consult with a naturopathic doctor or your primary care physician. Do NOT take any type of essential oils or extracts internally, unless you are certain that they are safe for consumption!

There are numerous different types of alternative remedies out there, but, for the sake of simplicity and my own personal experience, I'll talk about herbal remedies and aromatherapy here.

I have used herbal remedies off and on for most of 10 years. I have been mostly pleased with the results. Many herbal medicines come in different forms, it's rare that you'll find one that comes in only one form. I have found that using capsules with the ground herb in them tend to work best.

I have used Goldenseal Root to help with cold symptoms and urinary tract infections- it's important not to take it at the very beginning of a cold, as it could cause your mucous membranes to dry up too much, which will hinder your body from healing from a cold. I discovered that the hard way.

I have found that Cat Nip extract works very well in drop form, to help with teething pain in infants, insomnia in myself and it has an overall calming effect. I found Cat Nip tea in a store one time and haven't been able to locate it since, so I'm not sure if it would work as well or not.

I have also used herbs in tea form, this seems to be one of the easiest ways to get whatever you're needing into your body, although it's important to follow steeping instructions exactly- and make sure you are buying high-quality teas from a reputable company.

Aromatherapy has been a life-saver for me when dealing with colds, flu symptoms, children teething, my own insomnia, etc. I've discovered that the best way to use aromatherapy is to purchase a diffuser and putting a few drops of the essential oil into the diffuser with at least a cup of water. This helps the fragrance get through the air in the entire room and it won't make the scent TOO strong, which would be more irritating than helpful.

I can attest to the fact that alternative medicine works, and I feel it has less side effects than contemporary medicine. The best way to use alternative remedies, I have discovered, is to thoroughly research any remedy I am considering using and know the commonly recommended dosages/uses, and then also know what potential side effects a particular remedy might have.

While alternative medicine isn't for everyone, it's certainly worked for myself and my family. I'd recommend that anyone give alternative remedies a try, under doctor's supervision, of course!
